D90 with 18-55 or 18-105?

Hi all. I considered myself still a newbie in this field hence need a little input/opinion on this issue. I sold off my D60 n planning to get a D90 but the thing is not sure with which kit lens set up, 18-105 or 18-55. I still have my 55-200VR lens tt i bought with my D60 n thought tt i could use it with the D90. The thing is i read through the forum and noticed that most or all of the D90 users are with the 18-105 set up or others but not with 18-55. Is there an issue if the 18-55 is used with the D90? Should i just get the 18-105 kit and sell off the 55-200 lens, since they overlap? Thanx

should be no issue in using the 18-55 lens.

I planned to use that one too but someone offered a good price to buy my D40 kit so ended up selling the lens.

If you still have your 18-55lens, I suggest that you get a D90 body only. But if you sold it with your D60. just get the 18-105 since its included in the D90 kit.

I sold off my D60 kit with the 18-55. So now i'm left with my 55-200. I check out that they sell both D90 with 18-55 and 18-105 kit. Diff in price abt $180 btew these two setups. That's why i'm still a bit confused as to which set up is best. If i get with 18-55 kit, (which i have not come across anyone using),i can complement it with my 55-200; but if i get with 18-105 (which almost all using), my 55-200 will it be redundant??? I read somewhere in this forum that 55-200 and 18-105 not much diff. That's why i wanna find out if using 18-55 setup will there be any issues? Thanx

do u use ur 55-200mm everytime with ur old D60 ?

if u do, just get D90 body only is enough for u .

if u use 18-55 more, u get D90 + 18-55mm lor.
can save in the price diff between 18-105 kit and get another lens / accessories.

if it helps to make you feel better , my kit lens for my d90 is the 18-55 and 55-200vr , twin lens combo instead of 18-105vr.

only difference i feel is that longer reach have to change lens, other than that, no difference. been using 18-55 for years now ever since i owned my s1pro and d50.

55-200 is still a great lens dont worry bout that

I'm also newbie with D90 + 18-55mm. No issue so far. I'm very happy with this setup becos I don't usually zoomzoom, until I got addicted to using 35mm prime. Haha...

what kind of issues are you worrying about? if you're talking about compatibility, no problems, the 18-55 works fine with d90

if you're talking about image quality, also no problems, it's a great kit lens

only thing you may want to consider is whether you use the telephoto end of your 55-200 very often or not

if not, you may be better off with the 18-105

else, the 18-55 + 55-200 combo works very well

you might get the twin lens ie 18-55 and 55-200 combo.. or ask the shop if they sell body+ 1855 or if they willing to allow u to trade to 18-55

If I were you, I will get the D90 + 18-105 lens, and then sell off the 55-200. A few reasons: first, the 18-105 is a very good lens, second the range is very convenient, third, you really don't want to keep changing lenses all the time or carry two around if you can make do with one.

If you really miss the tele range, save up for the 70-300 VR.

Thanks. I have decided to get the D90 with 18-55 as its the cheapest option with a lens. Alternatively, I do not mind getting D90 with 18-105 at $1600 but most shops I called only offered $1650 or more. Does anyone know where to get at $1600? thanks!

on 18-105 Vr, you found adequate barrel distortion in wide mm, despite is worst then 18-200 Vr, both lens have same issue. But you can fixed it on PS or Dx0

18-55 : Less Zoom but 52mm filter size, very light, convenient to carry.
18-105: More range of zoom, 67mm lens filter, twice the size and weight

I save around $160 on the 18-55 lens. I checked the snaps i have taken (own a Kodak 10x zoom PnS) off late and the zoom range was mostly 2x ~ 3x with occassional zoom to 4x ~ 5x and very few in >8x range .

now is it worthwhile to buy 105mm lens.

18-55 lens = about 3.05X zoom
18-105 lens = about 5.83X zoom
18-200 lens = about 11.11X zoom

see which one suits your need

i personally feel that 18-105mm is a cheap general purpose lens if u're willing to accept that u're gonna get sometimes fuzzy / slightly distorted pics otherwise. well if u can afford it an all-round 18-200mm would be a better option!

I've read somewhere that the 18-105 is better suited for video. Also, manual focusing with the 18-105 is better and smoother.

Planning to buy d90 with 18-55 lens...read everything positive only. will compensate for higher zoom with another lens later on, once i am more comfortable with my DSLR. Hope its good choice. This kit is cheaper also. Will be buying this month.

Just a word of caution ... when you are ready to buy, there may not be stock. D90 is selling like hot cakes.
