Of course it can take a remote. There is no setting. Just insert the wired shutter release and you can trigger the camera. Btw what is the model of the Nikon remote you got?

Please read your camera user manual to find out which remotes are compatible with your camera model.

You can only use the ML-3, not ML-L3 or MC20/20A or MC36 with the D3S.

Phottix Aion also can be used.
