It could have been due to the heavy photography equipment he was carrying or the slippery trek.

This is also a warning to other photographers not to carry too much equipment when going up a cliff.

A reminder to be very careful when traveling. Please also make sure your carrying solution is well balanced. It is good to move some weight to the hip level. That is why I always advocate the use of belt system together with a backpack to move some of the weight to the hip level to lower the center of gravity.

Condolences to the family. This is really so tragic.

MFA has listed out on their website on how they will assist the deceased's family.

What can our Consular Officer assist in?
- Notify the deceased's next-of-kin of the incident.
- Provide a list of local undertakers, if available.
- Advise on the cost of local burial, local cremation and transport of remains and personal property back to Singapore.
- Help transfer money from family members and relatives in Singapore to pay for any costs; if necessary.

What can our Consular Officer not assist in?
- Investigate the cause of death or a possible crime.
- Make an insurance claim on behalf the family of the deceased.
- Pay for burial or cremation expenses.
- Pay for the return of the deceased's remains to Singapore.
- Pay for any bills or debts that may be outstanding.

Do you know where they went?

Kangding, Sichuan. They were on a self planned trip with some Malaysian and Singaporean photographers. From what I heard, the others in the party were all blurred out, after Mr Tan disappear right in front of them... They suspected he lost his balance due to the huge and heavy load he was carrying.

It is a sad day for all photographers. And as some here have so aptly put, it's a gentle reminder to manage one's heavy load when shooting. Need to balance the desire to have great IQ and portability of our kit.
