Cleaning kit: get one of those microfibre cloth, and a good blower brush. For general cleaning, I tend not to use lens cleaning liquid..cos it can corrode the coating of my (cheap) Hoya filter. Just breath lightly on the surface and wipe gently with the cloth. Make sure the cloth is not dirty. Be careful about the mirror in the camera.. don't scratch the coating on it. Also when blowing, I tend to hold my stuff upside down, ensure that whatever is blown off don't fall back onto the lens.

Lens: Play around with your zoom first. See what sort of perspective you like. Do you tend to stay at the 28mm end? The 70mm? Or in the middle? Once you find your particular, can either go for primes or zooms in that particular category (telephoto, normal, wideangle). Or if you have specialised interest, ie. macro, then can also get a macro lens. I like using primes (light, superb quality, and because I can't afford the pro-level zooms :D ), so I have a 3 kit lens set: AF-D 24/2.8, AF 50/1.8, AF-D 105/2.8. An alternative set might be 20/2.8, 35/2.8, 85/1.8. Since you are using a manual cam, you can pick up the manual versions of these lenses at a reasonable price. If you like zooms, a possible wide angle zoom might be the 18-35 and a telephoto a 70-300 ED.

Note: nikkor G-lenses wouldn't work with your FM3A.

Have fun! :D

for blower, you may want to get A*F (Switzerland) from Konota...cheap and good!!

get a lens pen also..................

the A*F blower costs around S$15/. from Nelson in Konota.

the lens pen, around S$10/.
it has fine brushes on one end, for u to sweep dust particles with, and some thing like a fine cloth(or whatever it is) that functions as a mop(of sorts) to wipe away the dust and fingerprints. etc.

i personally own each of these and a specialised lens cloth from an optical shop that costs S$4/.

i don't use any lotions or solutions and i don't think they are neccessary for me and my lenses and bodies.

thus, the break down of the cost...

S$15 for blower,
S$10 for lens pen,
S$4 for specialised lens cloth from optical shop,
total = S$29/.

have fun!

There are plenty of places that sell cleaning kit. But according to cheesecake, you could get the blower and lens pen from Konota. It's situated at Peninsula Plaza level 1.

As for the lens cleaning cloth, frankly, you can use those that are given by optical shops, that is, if you are a spectacles wearer. If not, ask around places. Konota might have. I was using my CD cloth on my filters, which I bought from Towers at $5 three years back... work like a charm!

thanks! will check it out!

i'm using an A*F Swiss blower - that regular blue thick rubber blower - good quality stuff - from some shop that moved out of Peninsula Plaza, but you still can get for 15 bucks from Alan Photo (Sim Lim Square).

cleaning cloth, i'm using my Oakley Pro M Frame microfiber bag. i have two of them... then i have also another green lens cloth that i bought from CP for i think 5 dollars.

cleaning solution, another 5 bucks from CP - kinetronics precise cleaning solution.

one last important thing - a 1 inch wide paintbrush from any hardware store - sweeps those loose dust/grit from your camera bodies e-a-s-i-l-y... :)
