Canon G1x Mk3 and 430EXII flash AF assist light

Hi everyone,
I have the above combination and just bought the flash unit 2nd hand.
I am unable to get the red AF assist light on the flash to fire.
Any help is much appreciated.

What have you done so far to get it working?

I've gone to Custom Function 8 on the flash and selected 1 (Enabled).
Also enabled AF assist light on the camera body.

I have tripled checked that custom function 8 when set to 1 is OFF! But you also set camera to use AF assist on body, wonder if camera is able to know which is set and work accordingly. Also one expert said camera shooting mode should be set to single or 1 shot mode. @1:08
