I am a newbie in macrophotography. Those super close-ups that some of you share in this forum really impress me. Can anyone share with me what sort of lenses you actually use? What other accessories do you use? I tried to take some macroshots with my 18-135mm lense and a +2 close up filter. Can get some decent close up shots but they are nothing compared to the super close-ups shots shown here. (I am a Nikon DSLR user).

you may want try out the 18-55VR and a close-up filter combo. can save cost as you dont need to get bigger diameter filters. use a ring flash instead of the normal hotshoe flash. the sunblitz or suntax ring flash (not ring light) is quite a good buy. but with the ring flash u'll need to use manual settings for aperture and shutter speed. using this ring flash (one contact pin) you can set much higher shutter speed, which can be useful when shooting macros.

you can try, but i doubt it will be enuff reach for those extreme closeup.
seldom shoot nowadays, my setup consist of a 100mm macro (looking for 200), ring flash, extension tube.
probably gonna try after getting another stronger ring flash :devil:
Hmm.. how much did you pay for the ring flash? I was thinking of getting 2 430EX and mounting them on the left and right of the camera using flash brackets... think it's cheaper than getting the canon ring flash.....

Have u tried matching the +4 close up filter with the 100mm macro?
How's the result? Better than with 55-250mm?

i tried the +4 with all the 58mm threads i had....
was doing simple test, not sure if it means anything.. focusing on the ruler and basing the
length on the ruler in the photo
100mm macro 1:1 - end to end, measure 2.2cm
250mm CU+4 - end to end, measure 2.2cm
100mm macro CU+4: end to end, measure 1.3cm
the focusing distance is effected as the MFD for 55-250 is 1.1 m, but with the CU filter, it is reduced to about 25 cm..
the 100mm macro CU+4 setup, if kept at the same distance from subject, gives 1:1, however, the focus window shows around a 1:4 only.. if i change it to 1:1, the focusing distance is reduced to about 10-15cm and seems to be magnified
*the focusing distance for the above varies..
anyone knows the diopter rating for canon 500D CU filter ?

3.) Bellow
4.) Reverse Lens
5.) Stack lens
6.) Macro Lens
Above 5 can be use alone or in combination
Basic supporting equipment you might need
1.) Tripod / monopod / Bean bag
2.) External Flash with diffuser
3.) Cable release
Of course there are a lot more specialise macro equipment to add on as you progress.
