I intent to get a windows laptop for my dad for his Auto CAD purpose/work. Any guru can give me some advise on what to get ( RAM, Hard disk, ie...... )and if it is cheaper to get it in SG of HK.
Thanks.

HK is slightly cheaper for electronics. They do not have 5% GST like us.

Which notebook you get depends on your purpose.

If you need light and mobility, get a light notebook 1.2kg - 2.2kg
If you need memory intensive, you may want to get a faster processor e.g. Centrino and higher RAM e.g. single card DDR 512mb.
If you need graphics, you may want to get a separate graphics card (not shared) and high resolution display e.g. SXGA.

This set up may cost S$2,000 to S$3,000.

if it is going to be used for CAD purposes i would suggest 2 things-
  • get atleast 512mb RAM as CAD is fairly memory intensive especially if you are doing 3d and walk throughs.
  • get a bigger screen- 14 or 15 inch as it is a bit painful to keep zooming and panning if the screen is too small and if your dad uses all the usual toolbars.
