Best Lens for the Zoo?? ( specifically the Singapore Zoo )

70-200mm should sufficient unless you want closer view shots. Important is to look up for moment shots.

Erm hi guys I paired up mine using a kenko 2x convertor with 70-200l mk2 is and the result is quite good I took some moon shot tonite and I find that the cropped image is still very sharp even at 100% perhaps can try at the zoo to get more focal range ?

hey guys, just checking:

the 100-400mm L lens that's recommended by quite a few people - is it recommended with a crop body?

TIA! :)

After so many visit to the Singapore zoological garden, (Singapore Zoo is a totally different location) I find the 100-400 most versatile. I had used 400 f5.6L which I find lacks the flexibility for zoo animals. Also have used 700-200f2.8IS and 500mm for real closeup shots. Best is still the 100-400L.

Sample of what a 500mm can gives you in the Zoo. Isolate the white rhino from the surrounding to give a more natural feel. Till I have a chance ti go to Africa to get the real wild Rhinos.

V v nice. I don't recall the rhinos being at 500mm range. :)
I go with a 70-200 f4 1.4x extender. But I just snap and go. So super average shots.

The 70-200 f/4 IS with a 1.4x TC is sufficient for my needs.

There is a saying...
 " .... If you do not have lenses to shoot birds or object far away , use whatever you have to shoot an elephant, horses and home/farm animals that are near to you...." :bsmilie: :sweatsm:

i used a 70-200mm with a 7D for the singapore zoo and it was a little too much as most of the animals are extremely close to you, well except for the tigers and orangutans enclosures, so to me it was a little too much for me. Eventually i went again with family members and this time brought a 15-85mm and it was just nice. If i needed head shots, i can just crop them. I guess eventually we have to decide if the subjects that you are shooting large or small, if its some small bird, then ring the 70-200mm, but if its like elephants and such, it was a little too tight for me as i had to constantly move myself back away from the enclosure just to shoot the animals. Hope it helps.

It really depends on what are you shooting and your shooting style really.

I love to capture closeups, so a 400mm lens is almost indispensable.

Here are some of the examples you can capture with a 400mm lens:

There is no one best lens but preparing a longer focal length is always nice.

Take with a crop sensor body ( D80 )
