Hi pple,

which of the following camera do u think is the best?
1) canon s40 or s30
2) olympus c40
3) minolta f100

pls advice, thanks.

you can also consider the f601Z; the movie recording feature is a plus

Not to forget you can also get a 6 MP output should you need to do large prints.

From your list though, I would choose the S40. It's actually almost equivalent to a G2 in a compact casing. Read more about it at www.dpreview.com

Actually, none of those listed are "high end". Most of the ultracompact digitals are not. ;p

But if I'd pick one from your list, that would have to be the S40.

Regards
CK

u guys really believe in dpreview?? remember, they are a commercial website.

Well, I don't go blindly by the recommendations (although I do take them into consideration). But the amount of objective information there is useful for me to evaluate my choices. And don't forget that there are user reviews and forum discussions as well, so it's not just Phil's opinion.

Incidentally, I don't consider the S40 to be an ultracompact. The Pentax Espio and Canon IXUS, yes. I just got an IXUS 330 to carry around everywhere as a street camera. It's got the sexiest little shutter click sound you've ever heard - and you can adjust the volume or switch it off! Pictures are good, and not bad in low light as well, at ISO 400.

A Better High End DC Camera?

:light:

IMO there isn't one "high end compact DC" yet (Sept 2002).
Manufacturers are slowly playing the game,
many consumers can be so easily trapped.

Here is one dream machine for the serious amateurs
or even the pro photogrs. Many pros used both a compact
dc and a DSLR.
;p

Size: as small as the G2 with adjustable screen
(for easy candid shooting and above the head shot)

Screen design: with hood (for easy viewing in daylight)

Colour: Chrome or equivalent
(black body seems to frighten people away)

Megapixel: 4.5 to 6.0 (no interpolation)

Screen quality (brightness and colour output):
As good as the G2

Storage: CF, SM and others with support for Micro Drive

Lens Speed: f/2 to f/2.8 with filter thread and adaptor for accessories

ISO: 100 - 1600

Lens focal length (eqv to 35mm): from 30mm - 180mm

Zoom range: 6x optical at least and 3x digital.

Hot Shoe: for any third party external flash

Flash sycn terminal: for any third party external flash

Shutter Lag: Must be 3x faster than G2
Continuous Shooting: 3 to 5 frames per second.

Body type: All weather (so can shoot during rainy days)

Video Recording features: Not necessary as serious
photographers will use dc or still images.
They will use the right equipment for video work.

Remote control: Essential for occasional studio and
location work.

For the rest of the other features I leave it to
other forum members to do the input.

Am I up going nowhere or am I dreaming?
Will all digital camera manufacturers
take the above considerations with a pinch of salt?

If camera designers are controlled by
calculative marketing management,
consumers have to wait for infinity or donkey
years to have their dream machines to arrive, or will they arrive?
The best is yet to be, so they say.

;p ;)
