Why should one using Nikon gear for the past 6 years+ want to change or invest in Canon? IS? USM? L? AFS? VR?

Beauties of Nikon versus Canon (Film + Digital)

well, I for one am tempted by some of the technological advances that Canon is making - EOS1D/1Ds, 400mm f/4 DO, CMOS sensors, ECF - as examples; and also relatively more affordable equipment (i know, i know arguable point and someone will point out the 2 pcs of Nikon stuff that is cheaper than Canon's ;p)
In terms of other tech like VR/IS, AFS/USM, ED/L its a toss-up as to which is better - Canon is further ahead along the IS & USM road, but Nikon is catching up albeit at a snail's pace (with the 24-85 and 300f/4 being the only true affordable AFS lenses right now) and probably more to come.
For me, and me only, I probably would not want to replace my Nikon gear with Canon, but rather supplement it. Now that is super-wishful dreaming .... ;p

2. Influenced by other photographers
who are playing with photo equipment.
3. He or she is not really a real ardent photographer.
4. Does not have enough equipment from the
same manufacturer, so can make the change without
much pain in the pocket.
5. Does not seem to trust and understand his own equipment.

6. Did not know what will be the future of further
investment in accessories and lenses.
7. Did not know that the Research Dept of every
manufacturer is working more than 24 hours a day to
stay alive in the current fierce competition.
8. Did not envision that very soon, maybe even the
next couple of months, a certain manufacturer will still
stay on top despite the norm.
That is all in my head.

Well, as an ex Canon user and present Nikon user, the feeling that the other side is greener is always present.
Its interesting to read Darren's post about Canon technological advances because the reason I switched over is the possibilities of Nikon digital. I see more choices in the Nikon camp with 3rd party manufacturers like Fuji and Kodak. I switched also because of the tech services in my uni only provides Nikon stuff to students. That gave me an access to a fairly good set of lenses, including the 6mm fisheye
Its really up to you to judge if you should really make the change or not. Forum opinions are more often than not, biased. You can be swayed either side here. You'll also have to evaluate if its a wise move financially. I would imagine you've gathered quite an investment of Nikon stuff in 6 years? So will you have a lesser system should you switched? How much more will it costs you to cross over and bring the new system to match the former one? Questions, questions, questions, decisions, decisions, decisions. You decisions.

Depends on what equipment he/she had before and what are the new stuff he/she wants to shoot. If already owns considerable gears, then there is really no valid reason to switch system. Neither is perfect and each one of them has a huge supporting group. Why waste money on buying more fancy stuff instead of concentrating on the one and only goal, the photography, itself? And after getting Canon later find German made glasses are better... :dunno:
was wondering for some time... like kit says if I buy kodak slr and sigma lenses, only the format belongs to nikon... lol

If changing systems can DRAMATICALLY improve the quality of your images, by all means go ahead and do it. If not, y bother??
one of the main obstacles to switching is that the nikon compatible bodies, S2 Pro, and maybe even the upcoming Kodak, appear to be really good bodies compared to say, the D60. But the Canon lens range does seem to be better (at the moment) especially at the telephoto end.
If Canon came up with a good DSLR body between the D60 and the $$$EOS1, and nikon doesn't do anything, no argument, must switch liao!!!!!!!
