hi, i am helping a friend to shoot bead and jewellery. The question is do we really need a macro lens for this photography? Any comment? Thank you.

no u dont need macro lens....... u can even use a wide angle but it all depends on how closely you want to show the item....... a 50/1.8 will do usually

a macro if you want to show it at or near 1:1 perspective

Unless you need have 1:1 reproduction ratio, you can use lenses such as the Tamron 17-50mm, or a 50mm f/1.4.

Other than having the lenses, lighting for jewellery is very important as well, be it natural or artifical lighting..

Ideally a dedicated macro lens will render satisfactory results :)

Depends on what are you taking. But for product shot you need it. If you wan to have the details of the bead and jewellery you need it. You will not need one if you are just taking a photo and show no detail of both.

True, because jewelery are reflective and controlling light source is important
