The guys over at dpreview are talking enthusiastically about this Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5. Anybody bought this lens? Any local experience to share? In particular, comparison with existing mid zooms like 18-70, 18-50/2.8, etc?
The macro feature is cool, but not essential. The draw for this lens as an all purpose lens:
- extra 1mm at the wide end, compared to the common mid/super zooms 18-50/2.8, 18-70, 18-200 etc
- f/2.8 at 17mm and f/4 at 70mm, slightly faster than above (except the constant 2.8 lenses lah)
In dpreview, this guy tested a 17-70 and found it to be of similar sharpness when compared to 18-50/2.8:
