Nigerian Football Federation suspends teams involved in scandalous 79-0 and 67-0 victories
The Cameroonian Football Association are facing some problems right now having been suspended by FIFA for a series of events that included the re-election of the governing body's president while he was in prison but their African neighbors in the north Nigeria are also having a tough time trying to extinguish the flames of controversy.
In addition to dealing with an unhappy national team, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has had to suspend four lower league clubs after a combined 146 goals were scored in just two games.
The 79-0 and 67-0 victories were achieved by two sides in the northern state of Bauchi, who just happened to need a huge bump in their goal differences to stand a chance of winning promotion from the Amateur Division 4, the sixth tier of Nigerian football. The Guardian reports:
In the matches, played at the same time, Plateau United Feeders reportedly scored 72 of their goals in the second half to beat Akurba FC 79-0. Police Machine swept 61 goals past Babayaro FC in the second 45 minutes of their 67-0 game.
The NFF has labeled the scorelines as "scandalous" and a "mind-boggling show of shame," which is an understandable reaction to two games where the ball found the net every 40 seconds on average in the second half.
The match officials have already been suspended, while the NFF's director of competitions has warned that "anyone found to have played some role in this despicable matter" would be "severely dealt with."
