i'm just wondering, how many versions of this lens there is and how different is it from another? also, what's the common street price for a used one?

oh, and NOT THE VR copy, just the 300 f/2.8 (if i'm not mistaken, they discontinued this lens)

AFS300/2.8 got DI and DII version. after that is the VR.

AFD300/2.8
AFS300/2.8 DI
AFS300/2.8 DII
AFS300/2.8 VR G

Those before I got no idea liao.

i think the AF-S VR 1 is ard $7k IIRC :(
the F4 non-vr 1 is just ard $1.9k

the difference between 2.8 and 4 may help you make the picture instead of breaking (especially if you shoot indoor sports - i.e. usually no flash allowed)

But... heh. You know who you are if you need (or want) to shell out 7k for this baby

AFI300/2.8 between AFD and AFS DI , reference - http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/specs.html#300
Warning - 300/2.8 AF (screw driven version) is known to be slow in AF (too much glass to move to focus).

OT: on
I shouldnt be posting this

Nikon ED 300mm f2.8 AIS Nikkor telephoto lens = USD599
Nikon ED 300mm f2.8 AF Nikkor lens *MINT = USD 1275 ~ 1755

OT: off

From where did you get the price for the Ais? ebay? very tempting as i am lookking for a cheap birding solution :)

no it is the father of AFS.

Internal focus motor (which is not silent wave) and fully compatible with AFS accessories (eg TCxxEII).
