I was at a beach party and brought my 1000D along. Dropped my camera and got some sand inside but only realised it when i got home. Sent to CSC and they said my sensor was damaged by sand (scratched or something like that). Any advise on what to do or is my camera goner?

Thanks in advance.

can repair but i think will cost u some money...

Camera sensors are not biological and have no healing capabilities. That is like scratching your eye and partially blinding it.

What is the cost of replacement?

Ouch man. Always always have your strap on the camera haha. All the best nick, sensor damage always costs a lot. A replacement sensor can cost S$300 iirc.

ouch, serious man, pity you.
i will cry if my cam drop. gahhh,
hope you can go back to shooting soon!

actually, how did the sand get in?
i would like to think that if water cant get in.... sand shouldnt be able to either.

Unless you were changing lens on the beach?

Regards

how affected are the images? any samples to share? if not very affected u can consider just using it as is.

weird thing is that the sensor should be covered by the AA filter, so that shld be the thing that is scratched. Theoritically you only need to replace the AA filter. May wanna approach some of the shops in peninsular or one of the CS guys specialising in repairs to swap the AA filter for you?

umm no it was just on the sand. when i got home i realised that there was sand inside the body and kit lens.

Its a damaged sensor. You already had the easy way out. It costs $7k to replace the sensor on a 1Ds series.

lol yea you're right. might as well get upgrade to a second hand 40d =/

can't turn it on and i sent it to csc.

i sent it to csc and they told me both were scratched, and they quoted $500 to replace the sensor.

i dont think the sand can get in between the AA filter and the sensor. you may wanna consider getting the camera back and sending it to a shop/non-canon person for repair.

when it comes to official repair centres, they will always advise for the replacement of an entirement component instead of just the damaged part.

so how are the images affected anyway? any samples?

so, TS Canon camera will have a Sony or Nikon sensor? cheaper then original Canon one?

some sand are extremely fine...

Be grateful at least u're not replacing a FF sensor which i think all costs a 4-digit price.

Ask about the privileged purchase from Canon.

No la, Sand Attack only reduces your focus accuracy. Still can use la..

Is it sensor or the filter in front of the sensor?
Does the sand reached the sensor?

Maybe they don't replace the filter only so have to replace the whole sensor. I don't know.

I got a few filters which came from cameras which were converted to IR
I could simply pass one to you FOC :)

Hmmm.. how did you manage to get sand INTO the sensor area? and scratch BOTH the AA filter and the sensor?

Sounds like you put sand and your camera into a cement mixer and cranked it up....

Better to get a 2nd opinion. Official service centers always suggest replacing the entire component. Better to get someone else see if the sensor is really scratch. I doubt it. If it is just the AA filter, it should not cost too much... but then again, this will void your warranty (if you still have it).

it seems like a case of attempting to change lenses when he dropped it onto the sand. open mount ready to take in all the dirt.
