both 17-55 and 24-70 are very good lenses. doesnt matter if you are getting FX next time or not .. get the 24-70 ... then get the 14-24 then 70-200 .. you will not go wrong with them cos they are the trinity. but i wonder if that much sharpness and f/2.8 really matters for your current need or...

/agree in my opinion, if wide angle is what you are looking for then 12-24 f/4 DX will be the best choice for your D40 .. constant f4 is great and lens is light weight too. but then for shooting landscape .. sometime we will use f8-f11 also for overall sharpness unless the lighting is dim...

1.7 is the only TC i will go for 70-200 and i think its way better then 1.4. 2.0 makes the af slow and IQ drop significantly. I also agree with Reno .. especially when 70-200 is a fast and sharp lens, 1.4x actually dun make much different in that range of zoom. crop it and you are still able to...

but egypt is one place that i dun recommend free and easy .. unless you know their language or have a friend there that is able to guide you .. people there are quite persistence ..and i cant take much street photography especially on people .. cos they will surely ask you to tip there.

i use 17-55 for my entire trip in egypt, it was a with a tour grp and we often have to move from one place to another in short time. the guide will brief the history of the location then probably only give you like 30mins to walk on your own .. very sian .. wish we had more times .. it still...
