The signboard is fighting with your subject. Probably doing without the signboard would be better.

Its better to do without the softening. The pictures at the top of the thread seem to be underexposed and messy. You could try shooting the dancers from the front rather than at that diagonal angle. the last few pictures show more expression which are great.

I've never done one before as well, but I think you should think up of a theme(if any) and match the clothes accordingly and have an picture in your head where you'll want to be shooting at, what the background will look like. I think the time of day would also affect as you're using natural...
