i'll be getting extra batteries for my trip too. but rather than getting an original battery (not very keen to get 3rd party batteries), was wondering whether a battery grip that can take AA batteries might be more useful. any advice here?

actually its always good to have some extra zoom. but agreed that the all-in-one zoom lens is pretty heavy. personally, i'll bring all 3 lenses since its a tour anyway and can store stuff on the coach. and a super zoom is good to take candid shots (of strangers, hehe) from a distance don't...

if you are willing to spend more, i was thinking one of those water-resistant/dust-resistant/cold-resistant cameras might give you better peace of mind ;) i guess the point here is you want something portable that can capture memories if your dslr fails? and image quality probably won't be top...

the sigma also does AF hunting quite a bit, but felt the tamron might be a bit slower and having used the sigma for some time, i must admit that the OS on the sigma is not that excellent, so if OS/IS/VC is very important to you, the tamron might be a better choice online sigma sample pics...

i tot the mirror remains flipped up during live view? it does flip down and up everytime you take a shot though, but didnt really think it contributed much to the shutter count. having said that, i still refrain from using live view.... somehow i have this idea (probably wrong) that exposing...

or are you referring to the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical? i've looked at both lenses for a short while (did not rent) and ended up getting the sigma instead. also did quite a bit of research online. i can't really remember the price for the tamron but its quite similar...

btw, such high ISO values for PnS camera probably will give quite noisy images so should not really be taken into consideration?
