I heard of some working for a wealthy employer but only getting leftover food or a few bucks cash for a week's groceries.
Others have a 5 days week and can attend weekend classes to upgrade their education level and even acquire certifications here.

Everyone in Hong Kong and Singapore are protected by laws irregardless whether you are a maid or maiden.

Those who have maids should know that SIN law overly protect them. They can sign the contract and break or run back to their agency as and when they like. The employer are the one who suffer when nothing is done to the maid.

Hong Kong has Western holidays and all Chinese festivals as public holidays. The Filipino maids enjoy all of them and the families are often left without maids during such time. Maid are paid overtime if they are needed to work the hours in the public holidays.

I think on top of that a maid enjoys 3 weeks of annual leave in HK if she accumulates more than 4 years of service with a family.

Anyway, most maids prefer to work in HK because of higher pays and benefits compared to Singapore.

Why can't you handle a baby at the first place? If you want to be a father, then do the job, why outsource to somebody else?

Wonder how to take care of kids if both parent are working? so you either

1. Dump kids at day care center
2. dump to your parent house or if parent staying with you ask them to take care
3. Ask wife to stop working and take care of you kids and Suffer financial problem or vise versa the hubby resign and wife works

So which one you want to do when you have your family?

Families in Australia, NZ, U.S. etc have a good work life balance. Eg my former neighbour who migrated to NZ, when she had her kids, was home by 4pm. In the meantime she leaves the kid at child care. My good buddy's brother in law is back home by 5pm on weekdays while the wife is a stay at home mother. My cousin who lived in Zurich was working from home 3 days a week when she had her baby. Now she has moved back here with the family she is forced to hire a maid because both husband and wife are working. The UK has just introduced share parental leave for newborn babies, parents can take up to 50 weeks of leave, shared between them. Of this, 37 weeks are paid leave. That's 9 months of paid leave.

Unlike in the past, parents are working longer hours these days and many bosses are not as accommodating to working mothers as in the west.

Hope that answers why some families need a maid.

So the problem lies in Singapore. This also explains why the birth rate is so low in Singapore.

However, our government said that it not unique here because other countries like Japan, Korea, etc are facing the same problem.

I didn't say the problem is unique to Singapore. But since we were on the subject of why parents here (presumably you meant Singapore) can't look after their kids without a maid, I gave my take. It's by no means a good reason but it's a reason why many households here do that (hire a maid to help look after the kid).

Since we were discussing the why when compared to western nations I am giving my opinion based on that subject.

Most families here employ maid purely due to survival. We can't afford to go on single income. I would suggest to the woman that either you married a husband who is financially stable to provide for the family without you having to work or don't have children. Having a maid is the last option as they are a major headache. Singapore is not like last time where you can have a housewife and 5 kids.

Listed here are options which you feel comfy to do in other countries they do hire a part time nanny or send their kids to child care. So i dont see the difference. There are pros and cons you have to deal with the cons. The bottomline here is now a days its almost needed to have both parents to work to be able to support a family

Btw how old are you Jedi cant seem to understand whats happening now a days and easily making a sweeping statement like that. I am a parent also and both of us are working thus the easiest for us is to hire a full time nanny to take care of the kids when we are at work

I did that before bro not carrying my daughter but bring her to office. But cant always do that like if you have meetings cant bring the kids in the meeting room with you.
