Long story short... my old Ball Head died on me during CNY when taking family group photo... the head just can't be tighten anymore. Hunt around the internet like ebay and the usual places for a cheap and light Ball Head as replacement... also tried looking at branded version around S'pore... too expensive. Ended up with this little thing I got from a website in HK.... which is a knockoff from a China Brand tripod maker (which shall not be named)... which itself is a knockoff from a Italian Brand tripod maker....

Photo taken with Handphone...

Holding my most heavy setup... EOS 7D with Battery Grip + EF 100-400mm L f4.5-5.6 + Speedlite 580EX MkII (with Batteries) = 3.5kg (+/-)

Safety lock... prevent base plate from falling off even if clap is not tighten...

The brand/Model... RUBY 005H - RUBY 005H Aluminium Magnesium Alloy Tripod Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate Adapter - Black

For around $28 USD (including shipping)... anyone else willing to try ?? :bsmilie:

Anyone else also using non traditional brand Ball Head that is cheap and get the job done... please share...

This ball head looks good. My current one also died, screw cannot tighten. I had been looking around for a replacement for some time already. This one seems to fit the bill-affordable and does the job. Thanks for sharing.

I managed to grab a Vanguard ABH-340K off Amazon a month back at around SGD110 plus shipping, which is really a steal as it was one last few Vanguard heads with an elliptical ball. Plus it accepts Arca-Swiss plates. Load rating's pretty massive too, at 40kg, but I don't think I'll be testing it out any time soon though!

Okay lah, Vanguard heads aren't exactly non-mainstream but back during my early days of photography, I was using a Fancier tripod and ballhead, which lasted me surprisingly long despite its diminutive size.

I am using the same/smaller ballhead, but it is not branded.

Like TS said, cheap and good. Only bad points are 1) workmanship a bit coarse and 2) the quick release clamp is not arca-swiss compatible.

What I did is to swap the quick release plate to a arca-swiss compatible one. Works great since then! :)

BTW, Aliexpress got more choices: This one looks even better (looks like arca-swiss compatible) - camera Tripod Ball Head Ballhead + Quick Release Plate TripodHead Free Shipping Top Quality-in Tripods from Consumer Electronics on Aliexpress.com

Yup... same issue I have. The clamp that tighten the base plate is abit stiff... but the safety lock works perfectly... it could also use Benro's base plate....

Otherwise... the Ball Head work as it should... and can't expect too much for $28 USD... :bsmilie:
