Congratz to yr new purchase on d summilux. Enjoy.

Light weight, no point having stuff that is too heavy to bring out.

Anything not used in 3 mths, for me, will be put up for sale. Buys are based on wants that i have convinced myself as needs hence i usually buy second hand.

good buy best buy must buy

for all hobbyists that don't earn from photography... how do you convince yourself about what is a "need"?

technically everything is a want.

unless you will convulse and have seizures when your camera is taken from you

"but mooooooom, I need it for my homeworkkkkkkkk" :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

I buy what I think I will use.

I was looking at a Sigma 4.5mm circular fisheye for the longest time. Then I thought about how I'd only probably use it sparingly during travels and maybe only in Gardens by the Bay and Raffles Place and maybeee Marina Bay area. Then I didn't buy it. :bsmilie:

E.g. I have a 24-85 for occasional travel and general purpose lens as I mainly use primes. Do I need the 24-70? No.

for me, old is gold .

my newest lens is a 50 mm 1.8 secondhand, the oldest is older than me . . . 1970s Pentacon 135 mm .

i am done acquiring lens and flashes. . . time to use them and have fun shooting

Nothing is a need if my living doesn't depend on it. So it is a matter of choice of definition of what you want to achieve. If you define that as achieving good images that can win you awards, of course, certain lenses will become a need. Then again, for me, i believe all of my wants are just wants. Just want to having tried and used the lens just for the sake of having used them, so it is indeed really wants than needs.

One method:
- have sufficient "extra" $$$
- justify to yourself what are you missing out without that piece of equipment or what else u can achieve
- calc weight, to ensure total weight of outfit does not exceed the pre-determined max weight.

From a hobbyist:

1. I identify what I like (or "want") to shoot (not the gear I like or I want to get :) )
2. Then based on no. 1, I'll try to find the gears I NEED.

As for my case: I like to shoot candid, street, event, and portrait.
That translates into: 1 crop body (Canon 60D), 1 UWA (Tamron 10-24), 2 primes (Canon 28mm 1.8 & 85mm 1.8), and 1 telezoom (Canon 70-200 2.8 IS mk1). All bought second hand except the body.

I don't have any speedlight (at least for now), because - well you don't really use flash for street (prefer to stay discreet), and most likely won't be allowed to use one during events (think something like night music gig, small concert, etc). And so far my primes handles low light conditions well.

Of course I won't be able to achieve something like this -> http://pixelcurse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/jump_23.jpg but oh well..

My 2 cents.

I feel like it

I think "feel good" factor cannot be underestimated.

If you don't feel good about carrying a tin box with a hole in it, you won't be shooting much.

If you get the latest Nikon dslr please get a camera belt with the model on it in gold and announce it to the world. :bsmilie:
