New boy needs help!!

Hi seniors,

I just started photography as a hobby not very long( about 1 mth), and only had 1 lens (Canon 18-200mm). Currently using canon 60D.

Last weekend went to mbs to try shooting fireworks. I got the tripod and the remote. I got to know that using bulb mode to shoot would be the best. But I try and I got the picture somehow  not right. The background turn out to be quite red or orange.

Really hope that anyone would give me good advice on how to get a good firework picture using the only lens I had. :cry:

That sounds like you don't like the WB used (images shot at night tend to be very warm using Auto WB), nothing to do with bulb mode. Suggest you either: shoot in RAW (you can tweak the WB afterwards during RAW development); or just set Tungsten WB, this should resolve your "red" BG (though the image will be cooler than what you are seeing now). To be sure though, it might be best to post the photographs. Cheers!

1) Shoot in RAW, so later can tune the WB to what u want.
2) Shoot with tripod
3) Shoot with remote control
4) Shoot using Bulb mode

The later 3 points you already know.

You can post you pic in any image hosting site like flickr and/or photobucket. Actually facebook pic can be posted too.

Anyway, it is wise to use any lens, even tele lens, depending on what you want to shoot and at what composition you want with your firework shots.

18-200 - depends on your requirements. Of course, if you want to capture the broad expense of a cluster of large buildings, 200mm lens will not be suitable (unless you do a panorama, which would be painful). But a 200mm lens will be good if you wish to shoot say, a cat quite a distance away. Once again, this has nothing to do with your apparent issue with the photograph.

If you are using Firefox, you can right click the Facebook image, select "Copy Image Link", then paste the copied link between the IMG tags here in CS:

(type this into the reply box, removing the fullstops, which are added to ensure that the tags appear)

It is the white balance issue.

Switch to incandescent WB and it should be cool enough.

I use the Kelvin scale, so it is more precise. Can't be sure if your dSLR has one. If not, just fine tune it in the WB menu.

Just checked. Yes, the Canon 60D has the ability to select a specific Kelvin color temperature.

Go experiment between 3,000 - 4,300K.

Anyway, it is a matter of taste. Some like warmer colors, others cooler colors.

Using Google Chrome, right click on the image and select "Open in new tab".

Copy the url from the url bar and insert using

Btw... do you shoot in RAW or Jpeg format? If you shoot in RAW, then you can go back to the computer and play around with the WB setting easily.

I shoot it in jpeg. Cause I have not much idea in editing. So I try to shoot until what I want to get. Maybe I will try that the next time.

Set your whitebalance to tungsten next time.

a wise man told me : if White balance messed up, switch to Black and White, easy fix :bsmilie:
