IR or Radio Shutter Release?

Hi bros,
I got no knowledge what's the difference between the IR Shutter Release and the Radio Shutter Release.
Please guide me through the differences and which is better for me. If possbile recommand which brand to buy
I plan to take self potrait , groups photos and family photos.
I'm using Canon 500D.

IR (infrared) remote control is basically a very simple device whereby you would need a direct line to your IR receiver on your camera. The range is pretty alright for most uses, but if you are standing behind your camera and not inline with your IR receiver (which was in front of the camera and located somewhere alone the grip of the camera) then you cannot activate the shutter.

A radio frequency shutter release had a longer range and you can be anywhere as long as you are within the coverage of the radio frequency of your receiver (normally you would need to get one that is attached to the hotshoe of your camera).

Another difference was that there is no need for a second device for the camera if you are using the IR remote, you just need the IR remote control and thats it. But for a radio frequency shutter release, you need to have a radio receiver that is attached to the hotshoe of your 500D camera... that say, if budget is not an issue, I would go for the radio frequency remote.

But it also depend on what you wanted to do... can a wired remote work too? They are very very cheap and reliable.

Wow thanks for the information there . Very well explained . I need a wireless as so I can join in for group photos without having capturing the wire too . Can ir remote do bulb mode too ?

Yes, you can. No problem there, first set your exposure to BULB mode, then use your IR remote as per normal.

However... depending on your operation, you need to point your remote control to your camera in front (as mentioned in my first post), so I would seriously suggest you get the radio frequency type of wireless remote, it would be easier to control as you can be anywhere, as long as you are in range.

Phottix Cleon is good enuff. Bought that, use that, no problem.

Can use wired behind the camera for fireworks
Can use wireless in the group shot & trigger immediately without having the picture where u r pointing the remote towards the camera

Why not get a 3rd party IR remote first? I think it costs no more than $10 from eBay.

I would say that both IR and RF remotes have their pros and cons. You will probably end up with both in the long run

I use self timer so they won't do that...

I bought a Pixal wireless (radio) trigger off eBay for about USD20, for my Alpha but I don't see why they win have any for hotshoe mount..

It's the fun of photo taking by using the self timer, everyone is excited. When you use the 2s timer, you press the shutter and run back to pose, somewhere in the process you tripped and fall and the 2s timer is up before you can react, you've got a priceless candid shot

Whoever want another shot just asked that person to go and press the shutter, you might get another candid shot :devil:

Expect the worst... that person who go and press the shutter, trip and fall... but trip over your tripod and your camera + tripod came crashing down... that would be a candid shot for someone around who happen to be shooting at your direction :devil:

the the person who's camera crashed, but for the person who shot the scene.. it's priceless... it doesn't happen every other day, and a lesson learn not to let others press shutter for you.. lol
