Bingo!!! Thanks Irvine!!! Anyway, still no regret for buying the 28-300. Only problem is it is not as magical as he claims to be and without IF, I must really put in effort to wipe of the dust after extending the lens to prevent dust from going into it.

no problem man lol.

btw, dust will always find a way to enter into the lens. even my af-d 80-200 two-touch where focusing and zooming r totally internal also got slight dust on the inner elements.

maybe put in more simple... all the 3 trinities has a ED..
so from there can start referencing...
not a direct comparison..
but you all are the experts...
why drill me for answers...
i was just trying to find a starting point for the TS...
i was replying to TS...
he can asked me directly...
or if my post was mis interpreted...
just can correct me..

is there is need to type like "please try not to post", see #7...

how long must i type more to reply to all these non related posting...

by that logic, AF-S would also qualify as a reference startpoint and can be compared to Canon's 'L' designation

Our point is that it is not. You're posting information that is wrong. We are correcting you. I'm not saying 'please don't post', but you're indeed misleading people.

re: Ken Rockwell, I've already posted on page 1 to not listen to his advice that seriously. Thom Hogan is a much better reviewer.

not fair.. mine doesnt have ED elements :(

Dun have to feel bad, bro, the 18-55 non VR SUCKS!!! haha... at least to me la (and there is a possibility that it is my fault). My prints show bad distortion and images are not sharp. I sold it and may want to consider the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 - unless this Sat win toto, then buy Nikon 16-35 LOLz.

BTW, all the Nikon gurus here, how do you actually define PRO lenses in Nikon? e.g. is my 28-300 pro? is 24-120 f/4 pro? to me, both answers are like no. But I suspect the golden ring is the trade mark for it, fair statement?

How about this?

Obtained from here under Requirements for NPS: http://nps.nikon.com.sg/pages/requirement.asp
Own a minimum of any 3 NIKKOR professional-grade lenses - The following lenses do not qualify and shall not contribute towards the NPS membership requirements:
- Any lens that was packaged as a kit lens by Nikon now or in the past (e.g. 18-55mm DX, 18-105mm DX, 18-135mm DX, 18-70mm, 28-80mm, etc.)

If I'm not wrong 50mm f/1.8D was kit lens for D300s or Fx bodies? I'm not sure...

hahah i was trying to be funny back there :p

to me, usually pro lenses do not necessarily to be marked by a gold ring (look at the af-d generation of the lenses, for example 80-200 two touch, 85 f/1.4 n many other lenses). like i mentioned earlier, look at the build of each lens instead. looking at the price tag (when they were first launched) is also another way to determine if it's a pro lens or not :p

Chill man i know u meant good.. come on everyone here is just trying to help.. C= Thanks a lot for all the information...
Just that at some point of time what you understand and explaning them out in words can be difficult..
Many ppl does man even i do...I started with canon cause canon only have like USM= Ultra sonic motor so it's a yes or no thing. L lens which is the red ring for "pro" which i think personally it's just over-rated when it comes to sharpness... and like IS which is VR for nikon... I think for canon that's about it.. LOL...where else nikon is like wtf so many terms..frankly speaking for a starter that is really into photography.. nikon makes life a little difficult for user...well that's just my 2 cent C= but i'm changing cause after so long of trying out nikon and shooting with canon.. i think nikon is awesome.. despite the price in lens.

Nikon used to denote lenses with ED lens element as pro lenses, but that was more than twenty years ago.
nowadays Nikon don't have an clear definition which are the lenses class under pro lenses, which I find it is good, so the users will spend more time taking photos and less time wasting on comparing gears.

I believe the 50 f1.8D is a recent marketing thinggy. Similar to what canon did last year, and probably to clear the D versrion for the G version

I disagree. My 18-55mm was tact sharp and I bought a 18-55 as a backup before.
Have used it for commercial shoots at least 3 times too.

haha then must be me lah. Did you have to do any PP? My pic tends to turn out distorted, esp at 18-24 and image also not as sharp as what I can get in the current 28-300. But of course, the 28-300 comes with VR which I can't live without today.
