1. in what area is critique to be sought?
Composition, focus, exposure, Lighting (using external flash to help darken the background.)

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
to Show its beautiful colours

3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
Garden, undershade. Using external flash position as far away as i can from the camera.

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
you tell me!

Actually a high shutter speed is what darkened the background, and the flash illuminating the flower to prevent under exposure.

Still, placing a distance between the light source & subject worked out well. I feel that the light falloff at the petal edges looked very nice. It's giving off a soft, almost dreamy feel had it not for that one hard shadow edge at the bottom petal. The 2 triangular petals are slightly overexposed as well.

Soft diffuse lighting will work well with flowers, and other delicate subjects. Pure black or pure darkness is already 'hard', a 'soft' subject would complement the composition better. Try placing tracing paper close to the flower and shoot the flash through it from the same distance. Might have to increase power or reduce its distance slightly to get the same amount of light.

Got a pretty good base, need to touch up the details.
