35L 1.4 or 50L 1.2???Which will be more of a everyday lens?

A few days ago I watched a NatGeo special on "INSIDE" the US President's Photographer. Obama's photographer carries two 5D2 each with a prime lens. A 35L and a 50mm f1.4. His other combination is 35L and 24-70 with speedlite. He was filmed using the 35L most of the time. I suspect many of his shots are cropped before print or selection. I have both the 35L and 50mm Sigma and I find that I use both equally as much. However the 35L has better colour rendition. BUT many have said that the new 24Lmk2 has overtaken the 35L. I have yet to see this to be true in terms of captures. But right now, the Trinity Primes are still 35L,85L &135L. No other lenses have yet to displace these three in terms of IQ by way of poll results.

got a 35mm + 50mm combo as well. depends on situation

Have both..and always carry both out..and the 135..

50 is more natural for FF while 35 is better for crop. Depends on how you definite "everyday" and what you encounter "everyday" as well. If your everyday consist more of buildings and street scenes than 35 probably is your better choice. On the other hand if its just humans and events, 50 is more candid and natural. A lot depends on the "style" of the photographer as well.

35 may be a everyday lens but 50 f1.2 give a better colour pics

While I do not own the 35L per se, I have an equivalent 35mm focal length lens ( an old Mamiya adapted ) that is much more used than the 50L that I own.

I have neither, but I use the 35mm f2... and I guess it's all about the focal length that one is comfortable with.
35mm is what made Henri Cartier Bresson famous. Its what film cameras were known for. Amazing for candids/street photographer and walkabouts.. Though I would think 50mm might do a better job if you like to take food/objects as it helps with the isolation of the subject from the other elements. Meanwhile, the 35mm also allows you to take creative close up portraits, unlike the conventional look you get from a 50mm.

The 35mm stays on camera 99% of the time. I also have a 17-40L and an 85LII. Also, i think the 35L is cheaper than the 50L, and a greater "bang for the buck" but seriously... go rent both lenses, and see what works for you.

i have both, 35L is sharper but for color and bokeh i love the 50L more :)

35L is my feveret BUT 85L is still my dream L lens..

I find both the 35L and 50L colour similar.

i tried both lenses and ended up buying the 35L.. loving it

any idea how much to replace the red ring?

I replaced mine (85mm) for about $30 if I remember correctly.

sounds like a great price. I am using the 35mm currently. Love it. Only thing is the chromatic aberration you get when you shoot wide open.

most fast primes and zooms have chromatic abberation when shot wide open. even the expensive Zeiss lenses have it

Are they going to release the Mark II for 35L ?

Only speculation. YOu might want to read the CAnon fortune telling website http://www.canonrumors.com/ . They can be quite accurate sometimes. Unlike those mediums out there, this one is free to read and believe.

Hi,

I would think each focal length has its own place in shooting. Horses for courses. Having 24mmF1.4, 35mmF1.4, 50mmF1.0 and F1.2, 85mmF1.2, 135mmF2, 200mmF1.8. Never think to let go anyone of them as each hold it's own and can't be replaced.

Keep shooting and enjoying it.

Cheers,

Seems like Canon has Patented the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM. Should I get the Mark I or wait for the Mark II (god knows when Canon would release it) ?

Given the ones such as the 8-15mm which still arent out but were announced last year, it could easily be 2013.......certainly not this yr
