Hi, I've zoomed in to 2 DSLR, namely the Nikon D7000 and Pentax K-5. Both are great cameras as reviewed on the internet. The K-5 is cheaper than D7000 by around 100bucks. And since I'm new to photography, i do not own any lens at all.
So i was wondering which DSLR to buy. Hope your could leave some comments. Thanks!

I would definitely choose the D7000 mainly because there are more lenses out there in the market. Afew users are using K-5 too and still obtain great pictures, so it's really up to your own preferences. You can check out this website for easy comparisons.

my general observation, most pentax owner will have at least one third party lens, sigma lens mostly. Most nikon user tend to have more nikon lens if not all. Correct me if I am wrong.

I would go with the D7000 because I prefer Nikon's AF but that depends on your shooting style. Aside from that, I think the lenses are more important.

Unless you really know wat you want in K-5 that D7000 cannot offer, the more logical choice is D7000. Lotsa Nikon lenses for you to choose from. For K-5, choice of lenses are definitely restricted and have to rely on 3rd party lenses.

Dun need to get too worried about making the right or wrong choice. Both are really good systems. Just fix your choice and start having fun with photography! :)

maybe you might want to consider which lens to get first?

it will affect your purchase becos you usually would get more than one lens for different purpose.

Regardless of camera specs, they are not that a huge difference so it can't justify that strongly enough which camera you would get. Work within your budget & try both camera bodies in a camera shop.

well Nikon is known for superior lenses.

TS is posting this in the Nikon subforum... and we all know what result you will get...

My advise to TS is and as always whenever this type of question came up... Go to the shops, get your hands on these two camera and get the one that feel best in your hand.

After all Nikon user or lover will say Nikon is better, Pentax user or lover will say Pentax is better. So if you post this in Pentax subforum... and let us see what result you would get.

Another of those motherhood meaningless statements.

Let's see, superior because of a Nikon badge? Let's just use something measurable instead of "I feel it's superior", which does no one any good, shall we?

Say, sharpness.

Here are the charts from Photozone.de pitting 2 comparable lenses: Nikon 10-24 versus the old Sigma 10-20.. On the same camera body.

Softer is superior? (particularly in the extreme corners (947 cough cough cough) at 10mm) Mmkay. If you say so. :)

o.o :D :) ;)

just giving my $0.02. why so defensive?
i'm just saying its KNOWN. not it IS.

k.

It is known doesn't imply that it is?

It is known that frogs are actually ducks in disguise. How is that different from saying that frogs are actually ducks in disguise? The inclusion of the word "is known" does not provide any caveat in your logic, fyi.

[EDIT - following statement removed, post not reported, because Foress has decided to retract name-calling move]
I have not called you an idiot, so I'm not sure why you wish to do so. Post reported.

guess i gotta apologise there. my feelings got the better of me. being a newb in photography, i have much to learn.

from reading threads here, extensively at Mansurovs, KenRockwell and other sites, the general consensus is that Nikon's optics are superior. that being said, i never said that pentax is not. hopefully you figured that out yourself.

i never said your opinions are meaningless, and you should not say that mine is, too.

Just feel the two out, nikon got its good pentax got its good. Wanna feel a pentax just go for outing as stores don't have touch no buy policy. I am happy with my KR with DA 35 but would be looking for 2 more lenses as in UWA and portrait will do. Why? I don't like weights and don't drive a lorry with 100plus lens nor do I carry over 3kg on relaxing snap. Plan your budget get your gear and join either groups will do.Good luck!

I used a Sigma example. Superior is subjective, that's just my point. To help TS make a decision, it's better to explain what is meant by superior. Cheers.

great, now my opinion is not "meaningless."
hopefully no offense was taken. cheers to you.

Sigma left Nikon right (or top and bottom if your screen's too small)

quite an effort there getting this up for comparison.
Generally at Centre and Border, both lenses are neck to neck. At extreme, nikon 10-24 falls off pretty significantly when compare to the sigma 10-20.

I wonder how will the actual photo compare visually when taken with these 2 lenses?

PS. This explain why my pic didn't get any sharper when I changed from the 10-20 to 10-24.

One noticeable observation I made is, generally, photos taken with the 10-24 distort less than those taken with the 10-20 but this is only when it is taken at tight quarters. What is your view on this?

Dear T.S,

For 3 torturing months i battle myself with this question!

Canon 60D or Pentax K5 or Nikon D7000

Having sourcing tons of info and asking friends from Jurong West up to Tampines ....

I finally bought the Nikon D7000

But if you buy the Pentax it is also a very good choice.
It's just that when i hold on to the Nikon D7000 .... i got a 'solid' feeling ...
a feeling of security, progress, peace and prosperity...

Do PM me, i can show you my camera ... and let you play with it.

Cheers!

I have this weird perception when I read Pentax forums that they favour 3rd party lenses more than other brand users.

2nd observation I have. Pentax users when they buy third party lens, it is mostly because the lens is better. Nikon users when they buy third party lens (at least more than half that I have come across) is because the lens are more affordable.

ps. correct me if I am wrong. thanks.

I'm the end, use what you are happy with. Some people will defend the brand they use religiously. But does it matter to your pictures? No. Look at the camera capability and interface, look at the lens selection you need. Go for the one you are most comfortable with. It is your money. And all the fierce defensive "advice" and "rationale" here is useless banter, if they do not apply to you.

I wonder who told you he/she bought 3rd party lenses bcos its better? I'm the reverse for both your observations. I do not have any 3rd party lenses with me right now and like Nikon users, i bought 3rd party lenses in the past when i'm still a poor student bcos its more affordable.
