I am using 550D and 17-40 F4. I want to get a telezoom lens. IQ is important. Any suggestions? Thanks

Agree…but you never say what budget :)

How far does TS need to zoom ??
Waiting for the EF 200-400 f4 + inbuilt TC will be a great thing ... :)

IQ is important and no budget issue than get the trinity lenses....

16-35mmf2.8, 24-70mmf2.8 and 70-200mmf2.8
;)

The UWA here is really not on the same league as the other two. Let's hope Canon can match what Nikon has.

I thought about 70-200 f4 IS but Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD will be more compact and good for travel. Anyone used Tamron 18-270mm ?

If IQ is important.... WHY 18-270mm ???

Just my two cents,

Canon 70-200 f2.8L (doesn't really need the IS) + Tripod (Good sturdy one and with a matching ballhead).

Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM (read the reviews, this is a fabulous lens).

If TS actually just wanted a general purpose lens, then maybe he should invest in the EF-S 15-85mm, this is a sharp lens and covered a good range - from wide to long range.

And I would advise to TS against a lens that cover too wide a range like 18-200mm or 18-270mm range, this type of lenses are good for general purposes but IQ is definitely going to be affected.

I have not heard anything about the tamron lens you mentioned but I'm pretty sure any of the 70-200 variants will deliver better IQ than this lens. As for being compact, well the f4s are really not that heavy and would feel balanced with your 550D. So what exactly are we missing here?

cheaper version will be...

17-40 f4, 24-105 f4, 70-200 f4

:p

Even cheaper poor man version will be

Tokina 11-16 f2.8, EF24-105 f4L, Tamron 700-300 VC USM

Oh wait…that's what i'm using haha..cheap and reasonably good..

How long is long for you? If you are shooting birds, you need at least 400mm?

If you can't carry heavy weight lenses or budget is a concern, don't even get near to getting F/2.8...

Tamron latest 70-300mm lens is good enough...

there will be a trade off between IQ and convenience. grab a 70-200mm 2.8 is mk2 for convenience (only the weight is an issue). or grab a bunch of primes e.g 135mm

Yes , convenience vs quality. The weight of 70-200 f4 is not a problem it's its length. As my cam is only a small 550D, I find it a bit not balanced well. and I will need to find a bigger cam bag. Right now I put my camera bag inside my big hand bag or shoulder bag.
I read about tamron 18-270 and my dad uses it for his nikon. I also have a friend using it for his nikon, also highly recommended to me. Of course in terms of quality 70-200 F4 is great but this tamron will be good for travel and hiking.
70-200 f2.8 is too big for my 550D and too heavy for me. I don't have v big hands.

Well , still thinking and struggling

simply enough. get a battery grip to balance out. a bigger camera bag won't be needed as long as u remove the lens from the body or get a spacious photography backpack.

i wouldnt go with the 18-270. superzooms never really work well. or id go with the canon 18-200.

the other option to the 70-200 is...85mm+135mm+200mm primes :p typically u only need 2 at a time

But if i was only taking one lens out with me, i like to have it mounted on the cam already, so if i take 550d + 70-200 f4, i need a bigger cam bag to for it and i know this sounds v stupid but i still want to be able to fit in the cam bag inside the bag i am using , unless i am going on hiking , then i can use backpack.. i know it sounds stupid but you guys wont understand why we have such concerns :)

Yes, i think if i really get the 70-200, then i would consider getting a BG. Actually, i want to decide and get the lens soon as i worry canon will stop manufacturing and the price will just go up more.

i wonder if you are using those prime lenes yourself :) what body are u using?;)

I think up to 200-300mm is enough for me. never tried shooting birds as i never had a telezoom lens yet. but i like to try out everything...
