Hello all, I've got myself a 500d, really love doing candid potraiture, landscape and architectural photography. For architectural, I've got myself settled with the samyang 8mm fisheye. As for portraiture, I've TESTED out the 18-200 for a shoot and oh my god was I amazed. The IQ produced, sharpness and etc was perfect and exactly what I was looking for.

On a second note, I have this old nikon mount tamron 28-200mm, I've bought the converter, tested it out, but the only thing I dislike is that it doesn't AF.

Question, what other lenses would you recommend my budget being $400.

Question 2, should I just save up for a 18-200mm?

I would not have recommended the 18-200 because of the small aperture and the relatively poor sharpness, but if you're happy then that's good.

You can try a cheap 50mm f/1.8 too.

Sell your old tamron and get a good 2nd hand copy of canon's 18-200mm. This lens (again like what I told many other people) is about versatility balanced with (not the top quality but good enough) IQ for general purposes. If you want best of both worlds then I cannot think of a single lens that can give you the range with top notch IQ.

Use search function, you might see enough sample pictures by the happy users of this lens (esp brother Anson's).

2nd hand makes it better value for money --> if you are lucky you can find one for $600+ range. Enough after you manage to sell off your tamron.

Lol. 50mm got this nikon 1.4, very happy with it already. This tamron, how much does it usually cost outside? 28-200 aspherical. 3.5-5.6. Think will sell away go get my 18-200 and enjoy. Thanks

Not sure what lenses are good for your uses, as everyone has personal preferences, but if you're happy with the 18-200, then why not just get it?

Hmmm I can't give a tip on which lens is good for u
But maybe before u get any lens
U might wanna ask urself wat Ur lens is gonna Mai ly be used for
If u are using it for general purpose and multi task
Then as wat u planned u can get a zoom lens

If u wanna specifically go for portrait shots like wat I mostly do
U can actually go for 50 mm lens
The aperture wise helps brings out Ur subject

I am well aquainted with the Tamron lens you mentioned. I used to use it before selling it some time ago.

It was a decent lens when I used it, but I grew dissatisfied with superzooms after a while.

Why? I find the small apertures very limiting, and superzooms typically do not meet my standards of sharpness, contrast and other properties I value.

I have used the Canon 18-200mm IS and I was not impressed either.

I favor primes and fast zooms these days. Not that I am rich, but I like what I have.

S$400 will not get you a 85mm or 105mm new. You can probably get a 2nd hand 85mm f/1.8 if you stretch your budget a little.
