Hi everyone,

I'm new to DSLR. just bought Canon 550D recently. tried taking so many pics, nothing satisfied. had a trip to the Jurong Bird Park. tried taking at the World of darkness on the owl. nothing came out :cry:.how do I concur night pix like this without using flash?

need to do some reading on the following: ISO. aperture. shutter speed. :sweat:

in the dark, you need high ISO, large aperture and slow shutter speed to let as much light (and image) into the sensor as possible. this won't really work in pitch black darkness though.

i suppose you need a higher iso, bigger apperture and a slower shutter speed. do note that while higher iso is more sensitive to light, it also increase the noise on your photos. N due to the slow shutter speed, you need a tripod.

Try iso 800 or 1600, aperture depends on your lens and maybe 1 - 5 sec?

i'm not sure if this is correct, better let the pros explain. i'll take this chance to check my understanding..

as for pitch black darkness, i think you LL need flash bah..

get a tripod will be good for night shot without flash. Especially owls seldom move. :think:

I concur with Makolit, you need to understand the exposure triangle - aperture, speed & ISO and how it affect the other when it's changed. You need to understand how the features on your camera functions. There are many website on photography tutorial for beginners. Read widely and shoot plenty

Hi, i think u should read some basic photography books to get a better understanding, it helps a lot. i have such problems too last time when i couldnt get the pics i want. then realize is coz i havent grasped the concepts yet.

I took the owl, it came out not really good even in high iso. The place is just too dark. Best to use a tripod and a wired / wireless shutter release which I did not bring.
And since I did not have tripod on that owl shooting, I did my very best to prevent shaking my camera by placing it against the glass for support.
