Is one considered a photographer if he relies alot on photo-enhancing software?

Use of photo-enhancing software (e.g. lightroom) = good photographer?

I would like to liken raw photo as a naked lady and processing it with PS as putting on clothes and makeup.

Sure, if the naked lady is a roaring beauty, then the pic itself is well taken. But adding clothes and makeup will definitely enhance the beauty even more. In PS terms, it could be adding border, using a certain colour tone to create a certain mood, sharpening, adding vignetting etc....

One forumer above mentioned that a singer cannot be considered a good singer if the song was digitally enhanced. I wld like to think of it another way..... i.e. raw photo = singer singing without mike and music/band. PS = adding mike and music/band.

In the above scenarios ... processing (whether is it PS, makeup, clothes, band etc) makes the end product more professional.

Thats my two cents ;)

I see it this way.

Photographer is not just someone who holds a camera and click the shutter.

You can be considered a chef/baker.

  • You buy cameras, lens, flashes.
  • You study about light, composition, how to bring out different feel.
  • You arrange/attend for photoshoot.
  • You take photos.
  • The last thing you could do is to make sure you bake everything so that they combine magically into masterpieces. You could also think of it as icing on the cake.

As such I mean by post processing. It's just the final step to polish one's work.

Yeah agree with ur analogy. Raw photo = combining all ingredients and cook a good dish. PS = arranging the food nicely, using a nice plate, etc. Something like Tze Char vs restaurant food. Both taste good, but one looks better. That makes the whole dining experience even better :p

Some of you gotta be joking right? So joho, canturn, ckuang etc the wedding gangs, or all those big name photographers in the fashion circles etc..... all not are not "good photographers"?

At least you won't get stuff like PP the eye to make it bigger, clone off the small chunk of vegetable stuck to the teeth, armpit hair disappear and arm smooth like silk:bsmilie:

small chunk of vege: brush teeth
armpit hair disappear: shave
arm smooth: powder put more

we didnt photoshop the image. we edited the model directly:bsmilie:

Draw in some additional strain of hair, background of hello kitty floating around, darkening a accidental upskirt shot during street shooting of a escalator:eek:

for internal usage maybe. for submission to court is a big nono:)

remmeber. if investigation, commonsense tells u that u dun have to wait for the film develop. but in court i'm pretty sure only film is allowed.

Anything can be admisable in court. It's up to you(the lawyer) to prove its authenticity.

err... how about an artist?

I believe only newbie or someone lazy to edit photos would be against PP. A seasoned photographer knows what PP can do and why PP is necessary.

Newbie and those who do not know how to PP i would say.

I have seen what CS5 can do to a digital photo, so, my conclusion is that all digital camera users do not qualify to be called "photographer". And any Digital camera user who says that he does not PP is a liar, so he does not qualify to be a photographer also, myself included, unless I shoot film and print directly from film.

Seriously, if someone really cannot stand PP, he should shoot film, because the processor inside the DSLR is also a small "photoshop". I think the newbies are unaware of this because they born in digital and never know what is film.

that means we are all GWC...?
I'm ok to be known as that, but that would be quite an insult to a number of creative talents using digital medium for photography...

Then.... what would you consider yourself as?

Well, the very act of framing already can be misleading. Forget about reaching the PP part.
Example: John Hilliard's "Cause of Death".
