K-x Vs. K-r Vs. K5

i normally use the 9 points on my K-x, the other two points i almost dont use. its been a habit to check in the LCD which AF point i am using then change change. i guess you just need to get used to it.. btw, in K7/5 can you change af point easily while looking in the viewfinder or you'll also need to press the center button same as K-x? havent touch any K7/5 yet :(

Really meh? I use 11pt also but somehow know where its focusing.

Anyways, K-x is good when u couple it with a split focusing screen.
you mean manual selection of 11 points right? because if auto 11 point.. man you're gifted

there are 3 possibilities:

- u have very good eyes

- your subjects all have very good contrast so no chance for the AF to focus on the wrong thing

- the difference is very slight and you're not a pixel peeper (i mean that in a good way :))

Thanks sircam,
If the difference in image quality is minor, then I still prefer to get the K-r for all the additional features such as improved AF, etc. I mean normally, we will not pixe peep for our regular photos anyway. Unless price is the main consideration, in which case, the K-x would be better value.
Can upload your test photos side by side so that we can also take a look at them?
Thanks :)

Well, when you have the K5, and if you are considering a very cheap 2nd body, I would think K-x would have been a good choice given the current market price.

But if you have just 1 camera, and choosing between K-r or a K-x, I still think K-r, based on the feature sets, is a better photographic tool. Best for ppl who shoot long exposures. No need to shoot 2 ++ min exposure, and wait for 2 mins ++ for you to take the next shot. It's worse if it's a multi-exposure shot, or when you are doing bracketing!!! Of course, K5 can also do that. Kudos to Pentax for finally doing that.

well said.

Sorry for being a noob but what do you mean with what you mentioned?
For eg you taking a 30secs shot, you got to wait 30secs b4 your next shot rite?
Or did I miss somethin?

yes. this is dark frame subtraction that could not be switched off on any pentax camera before the k-r/k-5.

Sircam,

Thanks for all your hardwork, comparing the different models. At 350 for Kx in B n Sell, I have to pass over to my boy, making him a new pentaxian.:)

Yup... a personal test was done because I do not trust the results from tests done by others! Need to see with my own eyes. Very basic test i.e. same scene, same composition, same illumination, same lens and similar camera settings. I discount the minor variations which are but natural in such testing. As far as I can tell... these three cameras are nearly the same for everyday generic shooting... which is a great thing for Pentaxians on a budget. Almost similar IQ for everyday shooting with generic settings. Cameras primarily differentiated by feature-set... not by quality of IQ for newbies considering which camera to buy!

The K5 does show a definite edge in my PP work-flow however. Which is why I am attracted to it. Along with its other useful features such as 100% viewfinder, considerably quieter shutter, weather resistant body, etc.

The K-x and K-r are almost the same in output. Very difficult to tell them apart unless I pixel peep and resort to extreme testing in PP. The fact that the K-x fared slightly better is just a technical point. For practical reasons and everyday generic photography they are the same.

The point I wished to make is that Pentax has not allowed the K-x to become obsolete when it comes to IQ. I now think of the K-r as an upgraded K-x... sort of like a new Deluxe version because it has the same output with a few more features for those who may feel the need for it. But put them together in a 'race' based on pure IQ and it would be nearly a 'draw'!

There is a saying: no photo, can't be true lah :bsmilie:

Here is some comparison tests shot in RAW (courtesy Devorama) and compiled into a nicely organized ISO ladder in a single image for viewing convenience:
