Foveon X3 sensor user thread

The SD14 is unreliable, slow and has very poor battery life when compared to what the other brands can offer. But I like the SD14 for being very basic, which forces me to understand my equipments and the lighting conditions very well in order to achieve the best I can get from the Foveon sensor. I also like the distinctive Foveon image quality that I have not seen replicated in any other camera brands so far.

I would have sold my D90 in favour of the SD14 if given the choice again.

I like the 1st pic. great evening sky colours.

I am a Canon user, and yes the colours by Foveon amazed me. Its does force me to think more before i press the shutter. Cos it takes a few second to process before the next shot.

My DP1 is always in my bag now.

Thanks for liking my pic. LOL That brought a smile to my face, thanks! :) It's partly true. Especially when taking fireworks or fast-actions shots with my Sigma, it is very much like shooting with film. It just that one chance. If I had the 50D on me, I would shoot on Hi-Drive and filter out the shots I want at home. Subtracts lots of the joy from photography for me.

Those using SPP 4.1 should reinstall to version 4.2. It runs significant faster on Windows 7, much faster.

the pictures here are poisonous O:

Had some time this afternoon to take some indoor shots.
Continue to be impressed by the RAW output processed in SPP4.
The bokeh is gorgeous.

Hihi... i will be goin HK soon. Any idea where can i get the DP series 3rd party accessories there?

hey keyuan, I'm sure the shops at Mongkok would stock lotsa sigma acces compared to the local shops :bsmilie:

I've seen lotsa shops having them in the past when i went, before owning a DP2s tho =(

maybe you can check out the HK shops people had post on CS and mass email to enquire for accessories that you want?

I just simply love how Foveon sensor brings out the colors and bokeh, and I developed a fetish for B&W shots taken at ISO800 on my DP2s recently, looks dam seductive and filmy, and the soft creamy bokeh simply rocks~

Really happy that lotsa foveon peeps are coming out, havent seen one out on the street tho =(

Thanks saveDqueen,

Yes it feels so happy to see more foveon fans here.

Sometimes i find Foveon fans, are like fans who are like range finders or like lomo.

Not so mainstream but addicted to it due to its look and feel :)

Hope the fanbase in singapore can get bigger. And we can see more shops selling the camera and accessories here.

IMO, the main ability of the Foveon is the high dynamic range to show out the dark area, in the form of what human eyes can see. Not able to see some content in the dark shadow, a typical picture is no difference from any camera. Unlike HDR software or multi-shot which makes picture soapy and halo, X3 don't.

A point to note that Sigma tends to make green look yellowish or turquoise, thus tends to give new users a different feel but if you want green, use other tool to saturate. Yellow green is the correct color for light colored plants under sunlight but many people may not accept it.

Pic taken at a old Ancestor Temple near Bukit Timah.

Jus click auto on the SPP, and add border. No other work done.

Buying from Amazon; charger needs use a power transformer?

Another Sigma DP2s user reporting in.. got the VF from babykailan, thanks bro!

Here's a few shots:

Those are compressed JPGs so the details might not pop out but the sharpness and amount of details captured is truly amazing for this little camera.

Agreed with one of the bros above, you really need to time and prepare for the shot beforehand and not just snap snap snap snap snap.

PS: What are you guys using for the SDHC card? I'm using a Transcend Class 10 SDHC 8GB card and writing seems a tad slower than a Sandisk Extreme III Class 6 8GB though. But it's much cheaper @ SGD$32.. while the 16GB card is about SGD$55. Transfer rates are decent and above most Class 2/4 cards out there - sustained at about 16+ MB/s (using a Lenovo's laptop built-in card reader, I'm sure it can go higher)

On a side note, would like to ask all of you brothers and sisters of Clubsnap here, would you guys want to bulk accessories for the camera?
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1585341&hl= (that's me btw)

If there are more Singaporeans getting it, maybe one of the guys here would like to mail it to me in Malaysia or something.
I'll only come back on November 22nd so it'll be later if I'm heading the bulk order.

The beauty of X3 in raw the ability to capture high dynamic range (extreme contrast) image between the dark and light area. Which makes it an interesting camera for taking pictures in the extreme bright condition which most will avoid.

The picture is a 3pm sun which blinding but yet the shadow, far horizon, sky are all visible. Bec X3 allows you to push or reduce brightness.

This difference between in inside and outside the memorial hall is extreme but easily achieveable by Foveon raw. DP1/SD14 has the IR filter design issue that creates red due when light is point concentrated. DP2 and DP1s solves this issue.

SDIM0053.jpg

Evening light can be extreme too which creates heavy black shadow under the tree canopy because the incoming sunlight is very bright. The disadvantage of high DR and "see all" is that it makes the picture flat as shown on the trees.

Oh no, I stumbled onto this thread with nice images. These images are made from a compact size camera? Wow, very nice!

Btw, I really like this image and the watch itself too :)

This is well known issue of Sigma camera. True-II engine may have lesser tint but still is present. The situation cause is unknown
