when u shoot in color, u can revert them back to black and white.
is that possible in reverse?
shoot in b&w and add color later?
so, if that is not possible, isn't monochrome settings obsolete?
sorry if question has been asked.

Depends on what you did to the picture, and how you did the B&W conversion.

If you shot in B&W in JPEG only, no, you lost the color info forever.

If you shot in B&W in RAW + JPEG, the JPEG is irreversible. But you can use the RAW file and still get the colors back.

And why are monochrome settings obsolete? Some people just work with B&W all the way. Nothing wrong with that.

Monochrome or B&W is not obsolete. I have been reading quite alot on B&W recently. To tell the story of your picture in color, I think is easier. To tell a story of your picture in B&W is much more difficult. The contrast and small detail become so important in expression, emotion and so on... This is what I learn last week.:):) Very interesting. You can google Michael Kenna photos.

pls dun misunderstand.
i love b&w too.
what i am trying to say is,
if we can convert a color to b&w in PP,
there is no need for us to adjust the settings to shoot in monochrome, isn't it?
or is there a difference in original monochrome shot vs color shot pp to b&w?

Perhaps for those who do not want to or cannot do PP, and are happy enough with the results they get straight from the camera. For me, PP gives me more room to fine tune to what I want.

There are people who do not want to deal with PP at all. There are other who want total control in how a B&W picture turns out, down to each tone of grey. Different people different needs. ;)

I, for one, never bother about the B&W shooting modes. I will convert my photos to B&W using channels.

As for your question on are they the same?
Look here

I shoot color to convert later. Gives me the flexibility of adjusting influence of each channel during B/W conversion which I may or may not use sometimes.
