Basic 12MP+ digital camera?

Hi,

I'm after a basic digital camera. Doesn't have to be too special beyond a) a high resolution (12MP minimum) and b) reliable and likely to last a while. Without specifics of what type of pictures you generally take as well as budget, I guess any camera with > 12MP is good.

The Olympus Mju, while not good for night photography in general, has the very convenient waterproof up to 3m and shockproof up to 1m features - appropriate if you have use for them.

You really should just head down to a superstore and have a go at the numerous cameras that fulfill your requirements. Then narrow down your selection and ask again.

TS, can you explain WHY you think you need 12 megapixels? Do you believe that more megapixels means sharper images?

If you go to SG Expo this week end, they have Fuji Film F200EXR - 12 MP, bigger size Super CCD EXR sensor ans selling for S$399

3MP is more than enough for printing 4R, 8megapixels is more than enough for 8R. don't understand why many people think "more MP = quality pics"

If they just want to print original photo, 8MP is enough.
If they want to do PP, having more MP is better.

only if want to do cropping..otherwise there's no need also.

Go to Courts/HN and select the camera based on COLOR, SHAPE and CURVES. Don't bother about the specs, it's not meant for you. Neither bother about MP number, those numbers are to fool novices.

You may look at Singtel/Starhub/M1 shops also Today is Friday (TGIF)

The first commandment of understanding MP is >mega pixels does NOT equate to higher quality pictures.

That is why higher MP is better

Then check your composition skills. Sure, there are photographers you advice to take pictures always a bit wider and crop when necessary. But this would only be a few % around the rim. If you need to crop off 50% or more on most of your pictures then something's wrong with your composition or you use the wrong lens for that purpose.

I still get a lot of people asking "how many megapixels?" in the way that suggests a correlation between megapixels and sharpness.

Megapixel count IS over-rated. Look for something which would fit your requirements in terms of other factors, low-light, focal length, zoom factor, etc..

I get that too. When they ask me how many MP, I always say 6.
