Recently, I've been receiving a lot of calls from other companies asking me to enroll in their spa packages, sign up for their credit card or loan packages, and even facial packages!

When I asked them how did they obtain my number, they just replied they got it from their database. But when I probe further how my number got into their database, they didn't want to reveal more.

I was suspecting that my number has been used by SingTel to sell it to these companies for marketing purposes.

Does anyone of you receive these calls before? How can I prevent all these nuisance calls? I felt like giving these callers a good scolding, but I know it was not their issue. Someone out there must have given them my number. I can't take it any more!

Sorry...this should be in the Kopitiam section. I accidentally clicked on the Portraits section without knowledge.

Mods, kindly help to move.

Thanks! :embrass:

yeah it always happens to me
before i tried their services etc,
but now i always declines saying im not interested:):bsmilie:

do not partake any lucky draw in the malls.
do not fill in your details for getting any freebies.

when receive such calls, just say "thank you, I'm not interested".
it won't spend you more than 15sec, and these people are just doing their job, be nice and everybody happy

Is there a way to stop these calls? I'm going nuts! Can receive 4-5 per day!

hmnnn i think there's no way tio stop them,
usually, from my experience, they got my numebr from some of my friends whom tried there services for free. which after the session, agent/conslutant or whatever to call them asked for referral in case they have'nt signed them for their service(unfortunately they've given my number to them)

Understand. I was being nice, but when you get like 4-5 calls per day, and they can come when you're having meetings, etc, my mind will go bonkers!

Hi there Moderator, I got the same issue as well and it was a bank. I did told them I am not interested but the lady insisted to hold on the phone and refuse to accept that I am not interested, despite repeatedly saying for like 5 times. So I told her off that I am a consumer, whether or not I want to buy, it my freedom. She accepted and 6 months later, she start calling me again. I receive like 6-7 phone calls a day for the past 3 weeks. I think I tolerate enough already and may need to go to the extreme, and start calling the bank to tell them not to call me again like this.

I was told that bank/credit card companies are allow to give your details to their business partners ie; companies who advertis on their flyers, insurence company using your credit card, etc, for their marketing.

If this is the case, it is no good. They can just use our personal details and sell them to whoever wants it right? Where is our privacy laws, or do we even have one?

this is what I say..

"thanks for calling, I'm not interested, have a nice day, good bye" and end the call.

with practice, you can say this in less than three seconds.

you can just say "bye" and hang up, if you are in hurry.

Is there a better way to tackle this, like not receiving these calls at all, rather than having to say this every time I get this kind of call? That's my purpose of starting this thread.

got.... just see whether you want do it or not?

If you just rudely hang up straight away, they might just remove you from the list ;)

Or if you know some exotic third language, just say the equivalent of "Sorry I don't understand you" and hang up. ;p

I think they have small prints that might set that. most of us can't be bothered about it. Its like those at MRT station asking for survey.. Initially you thought its just a survey but then a few weeks later.. they will call to tell u they are insurance agent.

But than, if you find them irritating, and the same person keep calling, u can just hang up or tell them to stop calling or else you can report them for harassing you.

sometimes, after you reject a call, someone else from the SAME company can actually call you again.. arghhhh......

And then, the next day, the SAME company call again!!!!!!

It is very difficult to track the source. It can be a very taxing process to find the source and request them to stop calling. There is no guarantee that if you stop one, there will be no more calls from others.

If it bothers you so much when you are in a meeting, go into silent mode or switch off the phone. Have a voice mail that encourage the caller to leave a message so that you can return the call at your leisure later.

If you pick up such calls, cut it short by asking - "what is this about ?" then immediately say "thank you very much, not interested" and hang up.

Laws - ya probably there are laws, but like all things law related, dont talk about the law unless you are prepared to back it via monetary commitment to hire lawyers to fight your case for you.

The trick is not to get so worked up over something you cannot control. C'est la vie :)

What I mean is, do we have privacy laws in Singapore as a whole? I know that there are very strict laws in the US and Europe to control this.

Can you imagine our ISP selling our numbers to other companies for a profit? I'm not sure, but if there isn't such laws here, then there's nothing consumers can do right?
