is Nikon D5000 the best entry DSLR?

seems like many bros suggest K-x over D5000.

have to admit i am a noob.. the reason why i so onto D5000 also because it is like a D90.. and i know D90 is good..

on the contrary i never heard b4 pentax so i tot it is a DUH brand..

Pentax has been very quiet as they are not like Canon/Nikon/Sony who advertises on buses/trains/newspapers therefore not many people know about Pentax.U might wanna check out the Pentax forums

if u ask me to choose between D5000 and K-x, I would choose K-x.

Low light performance both camera will be similar. They're both using the same sensor anyway (sony's EXMOR sensor).

The major advantage of the D5000 over the k-x has nothing to do with the camera per se. Its actually user base. The number of Nikon user is much much more than pentax users. Infact I think I even see more Olympus users than pentax users in Singapore... In terms of userbase, I think its Canon > Nikon > Sony > Olympus > Pentax.

However K-X is a better camera than the D5000, due to its build in image stabilizer (big big plus point), and its much cheaper than D5000. Also D5000 has compatibility issues with alot of Nikon and 3rd party lenses which does not have build in lens motor, so it can cause headaches when choosing lenses (already seen some examples of people posting in clubsnap saying they buy lens and it didnt work, then they realise that the lens dont hv build in motor). This problem wont exist with pentax k-x.

thanks bro.. some one kind pointed me to the dpreview site.. the site said the k-x highlights range is worst compared to canon 500d and nikon d5000...

is this a concern? does this means the flowers i take etc will not be "bright in color"

You can't say for sure which is better, but I would say K-x is better, even though I use a D5k

I think for high ISO noise, K-x is better because of the different JPEG processing engine...

Built in IS may be good but still don't provide as much stabilisation as in-lens stabilisation can (and I heard it won't work for video)

As for lenses, that one I would agree, I get frustrated alot of times because I can only buy AF-S lenses...Viewfinder too small to MF properly.

Just curious though, why is there much more people using Canon than Nikon? Everytime I go for some event it's always long white lenses or some black lens with red ring...

Honestly, I find Canon support to be much better than Nikon. I guess when your business is more than just cameras, you can afford to dump in money for customer service since your operations cost is distributed over so many franchises.

There's no best camera, but the K-x is the closest thing to being the "best" in entry range.

btw bros.. the dpreview said K-x no AF indication in viewfinder?? is this going to be a hazzle... does it mean when taking photos, i must look at live view, select points and go back to view finder?

i know i sound like a nag... but dpreview said d5000 : 75%, k-x 73%..

You must be kdding. Although I do not have a D5000 and I am a pentax user myself, I shall point out the advantages of the D5000 since the advantages of the k-x are well documented by many others already.

Advantages of D5000:
1.) AF assist lamp
2.) articulating LCD
3.) visible selected AF point on optical viewfinder
4.) superimposed on-demand grid lines over the viewfinder

There is no best camera. some of the features in k-x is missing in D5000. likewise, D5000 has some features that are not included in k-x. But both are very good cameras.

It dosen't matter to me whether there's AF indication.Maybe you would like to join the upcoming Pentax June outing to learn more?

Have you tried using a K-x before? If not, you should.

Then you can tell whether it is going to be a hassle or not. Personally I find it troublesome, but it really depends on the user.

But on the K-x, since you're going to make all your settings thru the LCD, adding 1 more step to select AF point, shouldn't be too hassle for you.

bro, after reading your posts, would like to share my experience when i was trying to shop for cam recently.
i realised that the cam is actually a facilitator and the lens is the true player. in fact there are many many so many cams out there r simply good, including the D5000. imo, perhaps if u are using ur cam for work that requires good quality, then it is very important to go to details. If not, i suggest u may go for what u like and feel good. I was looking at D5000 earlier but i decided that i should put in a bit more, either narrow into D90 or 550D bcos they give u a better "expansion" for ur future advancement. I've finally gone for a 550D as it is one of the more "powerful" one at a reasonable price. Of cos doing some homework to call up several shops will help. i am very happy with my new toy now. : P

i want to step into the DSLR world.

Budget is 1000 - 1200.

This can bag me a D5000.

I heard it is good because it is just a lesser model of the D90.

D3000 i was told is not so good in low light..

am i correct? is there a better model or brand? appreciate the kind replies...

The best entry DSLR is Sony A550,
it has a lot more feature than Nikon and Canon provide in their D5000 or 550D

Sony a550 has possibly the best dynamic range among the entry level dslr, with useful features like auto hdr. The minus point is that a550 no video mode.

If video is not a concern, the sony a550 will be one of the best entry level dslr. If want video, i will probably say k-x, for its value for money.

When I last checked a few months ago, the a550 was $1150 street price. but last month Sony has a price cut, so it might be even lower now. or u can op for the cheaper a500. the main difference is that the a500 h!s 12mp, has a lower lcd resolution (doesnt affect image quality) and a slower frame rate.

The a550 shoots at 7 frames per second, the fastest among all entry level dslrs. It's even faster than d90 (4.5 fps) and most semi pro dslrs. The a500 has 5fps, which I think is the 2nd fastest losing only to a550. This fast frame rate is good for taking sports photography and F1 racing, or kids and pets running.

All dslrs have their strength and weakness. the k-x is the most affortable, with body stabilization and video, the a550 for its dynamic range, fast frame rate and body stabilization, the Canon and nikon has much more users so its easier to buy and sell second hand stuffs....

It all depends on what u want. No dslr is lousy btw. all are capable of taking good quality pictures.
