Am thinking of getting an all rounder camera. Which one would be a better pick in terms of balancing between performance, practicality (weight, size, built-in flash etc), low-light quality, and of course value for money.

Seeking your advice and recommendations.

Thanks.

i see ur thread, and i can already help u make the decision in 3 seconds.

since u wan built in flash, only 7d has it, so just get 7d.

^^

LOL!!! :bsmilie:

actually a 550D is a better fit for his criteria.
Same IQ and HIGH ISO quality as 7D but smaller and lighter.

But the topic is 7D and 5D . so ill just shut up.

Since TS already decided to bite the silver bullet.. I will vote for 7D+BG-E7, u will not regret.. hehehe..

Let's assume that built-in flash is not a requirement or you can just eliminate 5D2 from the get go.

If what you want is an all rounder, then I think you can scratch the 5D2 off the list since you're probably going to struggle to shoot fast paced action (sports etc) with it. If you don't losing a little in that department, then 5D2 has superior low light performance. They have around the same weight and controls are quite similar as well.

When you start talking about value for money though, APS-C (ie, 7D) usually pulls ahead because not only are the camera bodies cheaper, crop lenses are almost always cheaper, smaller and lighter as well.

Thanks for your inputs guys. I actually have a 5D Mk I currently and am thinking of selling it to change to a new body. I have a few lenses all EF; a 24-105 F4L, 50 1.4, 70-200 F4 and a 17-40 F4L. Am trying to decide between a 5D II or a 7D.

wa.. then with a crop how r u going to use the lens? i know they can be use on crop, but the focal lenth... hmm... u will miss the uwa liao lor...

u think carefully what in 7D do u need loh.. haha

btw, why not wait for mk3 before u decide...

at least u still have a camera to play with now what...

mk2 is old technology liao.

:)

When is Mk3 coming out? Sure damn ex one. Now 5D 2 going for quite cheap and 7D price also drop. That's why I am considering now.

For a FF, 5DM2 is value for $$$ now. The the BnS sell price for 7D, I would expect it to drop a fair bit soon too.

Yes video is one of the key thing. I would also like to have option of operating at higher isos, better low light performance and the sensor cleaning function and larger LCD with live view is also quite useful.

ill put my vote on 5d2 if i really have to choose one. if your budget allows, keep the 5d and get a 7d instead.

If I keep my 5D, I would have to then consider between the 7D and the new 550D. That's another discussion altogether...:)

U mite also wanna consider ur current lens set up wor... Understand they are all ff lens and can be use on an apsc body.... However with the additional crop factor u might not go as wide.... Thus u mite either need to change ur shooting style or ur lens set up...

Tell you...very simple solution:GET BOTH! you get the best of both worlds. Ask me to pick one i'll probably take the 5dmk2 though, it has nicer iq especially when printing big and very good high iso, comparable to d3 and even better if you shoot on sraw 1 setting although you will only have 10mp at sraw 1. The focusing isn't as bad as everyone makes out to be...its definitely usable and not THAT bad for sports, but definitely worlds apart from 7d and 1d af.

So it basically comes down to what you shoot. Both are different in a way. One with high fps for sports and action and one with high resolution and high iso capability.

Do you feel the AF performance as a WEAKNESS in 5D ?

If AF is a the problems, than go for 7D

well selling your 5d and getting a 5d2 doesnt involve a huge cash outlay.
So you can easily do it.

But having a 7D and 5d1 is also nice. YOu get the best of both worlds.
IQ wise , not much difference in 5d2 and 5d1 , aside from iso 6400 and more megapixels.

I actually find the 7D interface with the live view/video record button quite convenient compared to the 5DII. U r right about the AF of the 5D being inferior to the 7D. Weight and size wise, both are almost the same.

Between the 7D and the 550D, the key diff other than the build quality is prob also the AF with the 550D having the same 9Pt TTL as the 5D II, of course the burst rate of 3.7 vs 8 Fps. But the price is half of the 7D and 1/3 the 5DII. Its also much smaller and lighter if you do not need the environmental sealing and not too bothered about build quality. With the savings, you may be able to get a good lens instead... SIGH, still in a dilemma...:(
