Hi All,

I've been thingking a lot on what camera to purchase. Ive been considering Cannon 500D, Nikkon D5000 and pentax KX. I've been surveying around and most of the shop owners has been telling me to get the Nikon and they can give me good offer on the nikon. Any advise from anyone out there? I'm quite a newbie thus not really that familiar on the detail technical aspects of the cameras. Thanks.

Why are you cross-posting?? You did not read ANY of the forum rules, did you?

I wanted to post a thread, thought can put it under general discussion. but when i saw newbie, thought i can just put it in newbie section as i am a newbie. Do not know how to shift my thread. my apologies

I'm always suspicious of recommendations made by shopkeepers because face it.. it is in their best interest that you buy something that improves their profit margin, rather than something which suits you best. Of the three cameras you mentioned, IMO the D5000 will be my last choice. From what I understand, K-x and 500Ds are selling out really fast through the island... my guess is the shops are recommending the D5000 just so that they can move their stocks. Of course, these are just my opinions and guess, so may not all be true.

Anyway, between these three cameras, I think that Pentax K-x is probably the best choice. At ~$800 for the basic kit, it is far cheaper than the other two which are $1100+, yet is just as good as the others, in some cases even better than the others. If you go for a dual lens kit, it's only ~$900 for the Pentax K-x and $1400+ for the other two.

$900 for DSLR + dual lens kit is certainly a deal that's too good to miss. I hope this forces the others to lower their prices and try to keep up.

Don't trust shopkeepers too much. They're mainly interested in their bottomline.

seems like u've narrowed down ur choices, the best way to decide is to actually have a good hands-on on each of the camera to feel which u like most. if u r thinking of getting the kit, also consider n compare the kit lenses that each comes with

Did the shopkeeper say Sony & Olympus lousy?

Welcome to CS :) Check out the posts in this forum, read up on the specs & go to the shops & have a feel of it. When you are comfortable with what's in your hands, then make your final decision ;)

To TS:

above all the stuff written above.. try to look at the lens each brand is offering.. do u hv one lens that u prefer?

like canon.. the low cost lens are pretty plasticky .. and no silent motor.. so lots of motor noise when it focos.. the build quality is also lower (thats why some of their lens are slighly cheaper then nikon)

Nikon on the other hand dont hv lots of lens like canon , so see what u need.. then again whatever nikon dont hv u may try tamron or sigma to fill it up..

Pentax is cheap but they hv even lesser lens (means u might need to buy other brands of lens if the one u want pentax dont make) .. ofcos many will say "They hv enuff lens to satisfy all ur basic needs" but thats what they think.. not you ...

at the end its really what u want and what u need... non are the same.

Like me... I ditch canon recently due to the fact that i prefer nikon AF-S lens ... better build, hv silent motor and Nikon hv good high ISO performance...

but to others these are not important at all.. then they hv their own set of reason to chose other brands.

All brands are good.. but there's one or two that is more suitable for each person.. try to know what is important to u 1st..

Normally I don't pick brands for posting but in this thread, I would say you have made a reasonable choice for Pentax Kx. Since pentax is the only brand you have spelled it correctly, guess you heart is already in to. :D

No. Pentax also wrong. It is spelled with a capital P. :bsmilie:

Reminds me of the time when Emjay first came in to introduce themselves after taking over distribution...

I would say Cannon 500D bec. I have seen alot of people buying this one and I also find the pics are very nice. However, it is your choice.;)

seriously.. u are not buying just the camera.. you are buying the SYSTEM .. once start nikon or canon or pentax with more lens, then its difficult to change unless u prepare to sell everything off..

Actually, if the TS is going to learn with this camera, he can just get something that is real cheap and would aid him in learning the basics. After learning, he can still sell off the cheap camera without incurring much loss. :)

imo.

This story may help :

Was at the East Coast sipping my coffee and an European guy came to look at my D5000. He mentioned it's a good camera and added : "In Europe, they say 'Canons are designed by Engineers and Nikons are designed by Photographers'."

Like any newbie, I was sold a D5000 (my first SLR). So far, I'm happy with it since there's lots of functions and I especially like the swivel LCD monitor and its lightweight. My dislike : its 1.5x crop factor.

I think for a beginner, it's easier to pick up and don't need a PhD in Photography to enjoy it.
