hello everyone.

i'm currently using a G1 + 14-45mm kit lens and looking to get a zoom lens.

since im a student and on a budget, i was thinking of either a

Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6
or
ZD 40-150mm F3.5-4.5

looking at the compatibility website, i see that the f4.0 supports auto focus while the f3.5 doesnt.

and looking thru our B&S, seems like the f3.5 fetches about $50 more than the f4.0

so here's my question:

the only difference between the f3.5 and f4.0 is the benefit of a half stop rite?

reading slr gear's review of the f4.0 lens compared to f3.5, they say that the f3.5 is "Not really worth considering this lens unless you absolutely need the extra half-stop of speed."

so i'm now at a dilemma.

since my G1 is a family camera, i think the f4.0 would be a better alternative since it supports autofocus for now. Do you guys think the m4/3 group will eventually implement AFS for the f3.5 lens?

should i wait a bit more, or just buy the f4.0 lens?

thanks very much for your patience in reading my very very long post.

think you shouldnt wait as im not sure the f3.5 will be capable of doing CDAF. the lens is very cheap any way around 150-180 only. i have both and will say that while the half stop does help bring in more light, the difference aint that big of a deal (not big enough for me to drop the AF over the half stop). either lens produces excellent results for a kit zoom imho

The f3.5 is rumoured to be a better glass than the f4 and of course, it has a larger aperture. I think it is true. But the f3.5 is a larger piece of glass too. If I were you, I would just get f4, which is smaller, lighter, and if u look at Adrewine's photos, just as capable.

get the f/4~5.6 since u said only this can AF wif your body. Another positive of this lens is it's much lighter than f/3.5.

wow! thank you for sharing an amazing thread.

his shots has tampered my disease of looking at poison threads showcasing lenses and their reviews. hahah.

but still need to get a zoom lens though. thank you all for your help. :)

Hi,

I am also holding G1 and just bought the Zuiko f4-5.6 lens. For my research, The f4-5.6 lens can compatible to G1 that can do the auto focus if you update the firmware to your G1 body. if you consider the size and weight, go for f4-5.6 lens.
