Thin black line appear when looking through viewfinder

Hi All Seniors,

Few weeks ago, i bought a Nikon D3000 SLR and was shooting around town but yesterday i noticed that when i look through my viewfinder, i saw a small vertical line that appear from the middle top to the bottom. The line only appear when i turn it on.

I've tried removing the lens and cleaning the lens using a blower and cloth but it does not help :cry:

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

Thanks Rashkae i will be askin a fren whos into SLR to help me take a look. worst case gota send in to Nikon service center..

Anyone knows roughly knows how long will service center take to check on the cameras?

I'm deducing from logic that if its a simple thing like dirt, they can probably remove it for you on the spot, but if its something they can't immediately rectify then you'll have to wait.

No leh... I can't see it on my D300. I just went to look for it, and nope, can't find it... I even turned off my grid lines to try to see... :bsmilie:

i didnt see it on my D80, followed by D60, and now D300... maybe I am juz blind to such stuff, fortunately...

to TS: if it doesnt affect your pictures, dun have to worry too much bout it. dust, dirt, will get in eventually. just a matter of time... unless you are concerned about its future resale value...

Refer to your manual on the section on The Viewfinder. For Nikon D90 manual, it is located in page 9 and also mention again in Troubleshooting section.

It says "Owing to the characteristics of this type of viewfinder display, you may notice fine lines radiating outward from the selected focus point. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction...."

I notice it in my Nikon D90 viewfinder, sometimes visible sometimes not... and it will turn red sometimes when in focus (as experienced and mentioned in the manual too).

Yes something like that but it appeared on the top and its more to the right side.

It does not affect the pictures i've tested taking a few pics.. but the thing there see already abit buay song hahaha....

yes last night when i show it to my fren, it did not appear. It came out only after my fren turn to P mode and tried zooming.. The line seems to appear only when i turn on my cam...

Also my fren who owns D200 just realized that he has the line on his cam too

Just go and shoot and enjoy taking pictures.


It is a case of look thru a window to see the beautiful view outside or looking at the window and see all the dirt and not see the beautiful view

I will be too busy to notice something like that. There are so many other things to take care of before taking the shots - composition, angle, lighting, exposure, DOF, shutter speed vs focal length, etc. Still got time to look at that tiny line that is almost invisible?

True, they exist in every Nikon DSLR even the D3x. And when we are concentrating in getting good shots we don't even notice they are there.


To the TS. Instead of looking at the wire in the viewfinder, every time you look into the viewfinder look at the following thing,

1. check the exposure meter for your exposure,

2. The EV value to make such it is at the value you intend it to be.

3. The focusing and the focusing indicator to ensure your focussing locked onthe subject

4. Check the Speed, is it too slow

5. Check the Aperture - how much DOF you want to achieve

6. look for the iso - too high or low

7. Look at the composition - not too much unwanted space, rules of 1/3 (if needed), the horizon (esp landscape photo), look at the subject to ensure the details are correct eg dress is ok, important details are not cropped off ie in frame etc etc

8. No distraction in the background

9. Check your holding technique and also squeezing of the shutter instead of quick snapping - will prevent shake at even 1/15s.

I think it will keep you busy enough to not to notice the "viewfinder's imperfection" (which is a non issue), instead get great result

HAHA i realised that if you set to one point focus then you move the chosen focus point around, the line will come in from different directions.

I still love my camera though :lovegrin:

I was out shooting last night and I didn't realise it at all. Unless you're shooting towards something like a blank wall, guess you'll hardly see it there.
