article: PRs preferred over locals.

Are you implying I am a QUITTER ....If so on what basis ....
You talk about loyality:

Why did I leave my country simple, my country went through an economic crisis, the company I was working for was laying off people, on the basis of Last On - First Off (me)and the big D I V O R C E.

So needed to get away, make a clean break, start over.

Any more reasons required .....

Cheers ....

Your first sentence already showed your lack of 'integration' with Singapore and our politics even after working here for so long. Aiyah, it's a joke that only locals understand anyways :)

I'm not questioning the reasons why you left your country but rather emphasizing on the motivation and comparing it with why locals have the similar motivation when switching jobs.

How many go overseas to study - is that loyal to Singapore and the education system?
How many people migrate overseas - because of how they perceive Singapore?

How many Singaporeans go overseas to study because they can't get a place in local uni due to the high quota allocated to foreigners?
Anyway, for those who studied overseas, if they come back and contribute to the economy after graduation, of cos they will be perceived as loyal citizens.

And people migrate overseas because of one simple reason, they feel Singapore is not as good. If not why migrate?

Let me just ask you this, why do you leave your country to work in Singapore? I presumed it's the opportunity to earn more and provide more for yourself and your family.
i don't know.. i think that's not really the only reason.

i've heard many other reasons (with relation to singaporeans who work overseas)..

maybe someone should do a proper interview on singaporeans whom you might call quitters.. :)

anyhow, elsewhere, foreigners (including singaporeans) are also being spoken about that that way. it might be in other local forums overseas, it might be to your face. maybe, when you know good honest people who just wanted the exposure to some place different, and really enjoy working in the country they are working in, away from home.. it just isn't so simple to condemn all of them.

actually, i am interested to know just how many people fall into that group.

other than the ones who wanted particular courses that are highly competitive, e.g. medicine, law. those shouldn't count, right?

Wah, this word is not coined by me one leh :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Yuan wang ah!

Actually I also interested to know, cause seems like a lot of Singaporeans are flocking to Australia to study.
7 out of 10 of my NS buddies that went for University education after ORD studied in Australia.

Read from a guy posting in another forum that when going to his NUS canteen for lunch, he feels like he is in Beijing :bsmilie:

mmm, yes, australia seems like the popular choice that i know for the ones falling into that category..

even then, to be honest, i'm not sure whether it's a zero sum game. i remember articles way back here and there that were of people who had obtained degrees from australia that weren't recognised eventually by various companies. in that case, won't it be safer to go to places like sim?

in any case, i think it is very disheartening when people like to compare, group people together. often groups of people are made up of different types of people.. you get a mix everywhere you go. there is no exception. often, we realise that we are talking about individuals here.

it is the same, when expats in singapore cry murder about singaporeans and their behaviour.. they are to be abhorred. when we singaporeans cry foul about expats.. it becomes a buddy buddy thing. maybe a sense of identity is derived from this comradely session. who knows?

Yes I agree its disheartening, I didnt know what it would be like when I left my country.

All I knew was I wanted something different and to experience new things whatever that maybe.

I come to the job in Singapore with alot of apprehension, as didnt know what to expect, how people would see this *ang moh* as taking their jobs etc ... lots of unknowns.

So as I have learnt over the years *what to do* so worked at my job. I come to Singapore with the attitude, *when in rome do as the romans do*, no choice, new country, new laws, different society everything new.

I also learnt that there are many talented people here. The workers I had under me were at the start, distrusting, always trying to test me. The only way the workers would accept me and then work with me was to earn their trust, show them yes I can do the job just as well as they can. Luckily for me, I could do that. In my case, I was able to, the workers accepted me, took me into their homes at CNY, Hari Raya, introduced to all sorts of *food*, learnt here very quickly dont ask what I was eating.

We all worked together for 8 years at this company till I was laid off in 1998, which led me to doing freelance work for other companies till taking the big step of starting my own company in 2000, which has taken as lot of sacrifice, hard work, long hours and surviving 2 economic downturns.

You are right that some people will only see what they want to see.

Do I like Singapore yes, I have been here 20years, its safe, clean, a different life as to what I was used to, but its called adaption. Everyday is a new challenge and I never know what it will bring.

For me I thought the world was where I was, it wasnt till I moved away, and learnt that there is much much more on the other side of the fence.

Agree many societies have the bad element, when at home little angels, when away the devil comes out.

Do I love my country and have pride, yes, could I ever live back there No, because I dont think I can adapt back to that lifestyle.

Treat Others as You Would Have Them Treat You!

Cheers ....

Ok, don't know if I'm going to get into trouble for bringing this out. One of my school mate did his NS as an admin clerk in Mindef and one of his job is to sort out job applications.

Instructions given to him is very direct: Australia Uni, put one side. UK uni, on top, US Uni second, local Uni third. I'm not kidding, but this is way back in 2000.

Anyway I'm happy to say that my NS buddies who did their education in Australia Uni are all doing pretty well right now, with some involved in government agencies.

lol, this made me laugh.

anyways, gandhi once said, "be the change you want to see". i think you're a good person, from what little i can gauge.. so one person at a time, no? one person at a time. :)

How do you judge my lack of *integration* just on a few words

I learnt to live within the system, which is created in Singapore, you have no choice right.

Politics, that nasty term which is taken many ways.

So Mr. HeiPiGu, define what you mean as Politics ...

Politics = Goverment of the day
Politics = Within Society Here
Politics = In the Work Place

Would you agree they all have a different meaning, outcome, acceptance.

Its how we manage our life, live within our means and boundaries.

Life is a Challenge.

My POV which started this exchange is based on what I have observed, it was never meant to run people down, but to show that in many MNC's here, they face a big challenge in staff retention or why they look at FT now.

Remember, to have FT, you must be able to justify that there are no Singaporeans willing to do the job and then there is a cap, so many locals for FT.

Its also about PERCEPTION and how you perceive things.

For me a simple pleasure which I couldnt do within my own country, is goto a coffee shop, sit with friends, eat good food, have a few drinks and talk. I can always be found at Hougang Block 212, 2 or 3 times a week talking with my friends, meeting new friends.

Cheers ....

My fren, the 'integration' word is also a playful attempt on current policy statement by our government.

Ok lah ok lah, don't want to talk about politics here anymore, later thread kena closed.

I worked in the oil industry too, and as far as I know, people who left their job in their MNC company will go to another MNC company due to a higher pay offered. It's a vicious cycle.

Since you've participated in our CNY, Hari Raya celebrations and tasted our various local food, I welcomed you whole-heartedly as a fren of Singapore :)

I  Singapore, I feel proud being born in singapore. I am a 100% pure made and born in Singaporean

when it comes to this kind of discussion, i always believe one thing - u will follow where yr parents are from, its cultural roots, language, belief, bloodline etc ...

there is a chinese dialect saying " fingers always feel better when bend inwards, not bend outwards " just think about this.

btw, this is a sensitive topic, not really wise to discuss too in-depth

i think the system of classifying DXO selection in the navy is somewhat still the same except local uni is placed ahead now before the Uk and US uni.
Aust uni wise, i believe is still being brush aside.

which is why i am migrating and having my son come back to singapore as a foregin talent

And i recount a very true experience of a MNC in singapore Agi***t suitated in Yishun. Singapore have this job rebate scheme wherebby gov will reimburse companies for each worker they have. Well, apparently, this MNC shutdown it's research center all over the world ( china, india) and offer the guys there the opportunity to work in Singapore. The reason that the local management give is that the Singapore research arm is spared from closing down b/c it's the best unit in the company. In reality, the company is taking advantage of what the singapore gov offers. Goddnes, that's where our taxes have gone to...to rebate MNCs so they can hire foreign staff. I bet that Agi***t is not the only company to have done so...
I just finished my reservist and my bunk alone has 2 TRUE blooded singaporeans where are still jobless after being retrenched...We have gone xenomaniaic ( the belief that all things foreign is good...)

I think it's pretty sad that we have actually come to this point whereby the PM makes such a weak assurance to it's people only YEARS after our complain. The FT is really a myth. What can these so called FT do that locals cannot? Do i really want to be served by China Chinese who cannot even speak english? My malay frens who cannot speak chinese how? We have foreigners writing in to straits times asking that local malay performance in Orchard road be done with english subtitles..( strait times dare to publish it somemore...). It's really WTF, don't these guys know the saying "when in rome, do as the rome do?" You dun go to a italian opera asking the actors to provide english subtitles rite?

Sigh...it's really sad when the sons of singapore are treated worse than PRs and FT...
