Hi fellow csers, newbie here, would like to seek your advice on what lens to use, i currently have a 35mm AF-S and 18-55mm kit lens..i am planning to buy a flash (currently leaning towards sb-600) and I will be using it on an indoor wedding event..as I do not want to change lens, I am thinking of bringing only one lens..so If you were in my shoes, which would you bring? It also got me thinking, aside from the shallow DOF, what advantage does a prime lens have if I have a speedlite already? Wouldn't my pictures offer the same sharpness because I already have ample source of light? I plan to use low ISO because of the flash, would they offer the same performance? thanks..

Are you the main photographer?
If you are, pls make sure you practice beforehand and I'd stick to the kit lens to be safe. If you are not, then you have the luxury to be creative with the 35mm prime.
Overall, kit lens will be more versatile.

The prime is usually faster in low light and sharper (but there are crap primes and good zooms as well :) )
The kit is certainly no pushover though and is certainly sharp enough.
A 35mm is not going give too shallow DOF btw.

Faster focusing...

Anyway, for your case, stick with the zoom lens and practise well with a flash first before the event. Make sure you're proficient on it.

A 35mm will cover a lot of shots but of course will need some PP work later on. Only problem is when you want to do DOF shots.

If you are serious about events, i recommend getting an 18-105 VR on the 2nd hand market. An 18-200 might be out of reach for most people who are starting out.

Can also rent the lenses you need but be sure you have enough savings to cover the lenses in case anything happen to the lenses.

thanks guys..I'm not the main photographer btw so no pressure on me :) .. guess ill just bring along th 35mm just in case but i'll use the kit lens as my main lens..

actually if you dont really have much experience in these sort of events, i recommend using the 35mm exclusively.
