Gaffer Tape the Camera!

I have a Canon 50D + 17-55 f2.4 which I recently purchased and I gaffer-tapped some parts of the body (the top of the flash + the grip areas) and the lens (the non-moving areas).

I am using a camou gaffer (cant remember which brand) and was wondering if there are any adverse effects on the body if the gaffer remains there for long periods. My camera+equipment are always in the dry cabinet when not in use.

Any one has had bad experiences with gaffer tape?

Thanks! :)

It is advisable to replace every 6 months

i tried doing the same.. spent a while gaffering my gear. but getting the camera in and out of my camera bag caused the gaffer tape to slowly peal at its edges, and roll back onto itself which was really annoying. tore it off eventually.

I just find it amusing to see people spending time and money dressing up their cameras so that they can start worrying about it after.

:bsmilie::bsmilie: Ironic isn't it?

do it! haha.

the sides will form residue if it stays there for too long.

or else, the gaffer should be good enough to keep the camera scratch free during all those hussles.

there is nothing much to gaffer on the 1755, probably the hood only.

Wa lao. But like that a bit un-glam leh... Just wondering, anywhere got sell those transparent crystal cover casing like those for handphone? If they produce similar cover for DSLR, haha it'll be good. :)

haha yea i think if there's some clear protection case/cover it'd be good too:)

i somehow agree with Kit about 'dressing up the cam' then having to worry about it after too but i guess, it depends...some people probably do it to retain resale value?
im not an advocate of protective add-ons either but bought a roll of gaffer just to have a try and experience, never really heard of it before and always wondered why photographers 'plaster' their cameras haha now i do:p

oh, there's another school of thought is that they cover up their lenses i.e the red rings to prevent prying eyes and attention?haha
but then again, that's the point of the red ring right, cuz if not there's totally no use to have red rings on Ls :)

oh well, life's a bitch and the thing we do are really funny sometimes...
gday guys, shutter away!

you see, some people buy the lens to take photos with. others buy the lens to show off the red ring to XMMs who have no idea what it means, hoping to impress them and score a date (FAIL).

Thanks for all the comments. I think at the end of the day we all just want to keep our cameras in an out-of-the-box condition and will all just try many ways to do that =D

One sure fire way: keep it in the box. :D

Some cams have sensitive bodies and will get rashes .....:sweatsm::bsmilie:

Ya like in the army where people have grass alergies and get excused from training. so why bother eh?

I think the camera strap is already embroidered with 5D Mark II. ;p

Why not buy a camera armour to protect it?

Not what I would do to my 5D2. Its like taping up my brand new car just so no one would dent or scratch the body. But I get what you are doing. Making it inconspicuous may help thieves from taking it off your hand. But then again with a DSLR it will always look good for a thieve.

This one is like Ninja camera, but look not so 'wei fong' leh :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

One thing is for sure though, re-sale value sure very high one, haha:D

i believe everyone will have thier own reasons to gaffer thier cam and we should learnt respect that. i gaffer my cam too but for 2 reasons, 1 i ve bad sweaty palms and i find gaffer tapes helps give me a better grap with the cloth like material. 2nd i travel to countryside of 3rd world countries and i feel better not to show the make and model of my cam to remain low profile..... just want to share my 2 cents worth.
