hi everyone,

I am thinking of getting this Mamiya 645 120mm F/4 macro lens ( manual lens ). The reviews claims that it is sharp. The price seems reachable for me.

F/4 seems a little bit dark.

Anyone have experience using this lens, please share your experience here..

many thanks in advance.
Billy

Hi Billy,

f/4 was kinda 'standard' in thise days for a 135mm format 100mm macro lens, and f/3.5 for 50mms.

On a 645, f/4 was actually just that little bit 'fast' (in comparison to 135mm lenses). An f/2 or f/2.8 equivalent would not only cost you a triple mortgage, but would be really huge and heavy (for the focal length).

I doubt if you would have much problems with the f/4 thingie. Besides, with the crazy soft bokeh of medium formats, you might find yourself shooting closed down a bit most of the time.

I can't think of a single major manufacturer's macro lense that wasn't unforgivingly sharp.

Have fun with your new acquisition!
