LOL, so its time to get the Sigma 200-500 f2.8 then? Like that sure have a lot of friends one:bsmilie:

Back to the qn, nope, holding SLR doesn't really make one a photographer (although technically you are one ;p), I've been called 'camera man'/GWC (those less charitable 'friends') at times :), really makes you wonder what you are really

well of coz it analogous to say that anybody who belts out songs via karaoke is a singer. and we all know they're not.:bsmilie:

>If owning only a DSLR makes you a photographer... I don't know what do you make of Ansel Adams, Steve McCurry etc...

Hur? Is the photographer tag so exclusive? Geez, wow this is new..

>A photographer is a person who takes a photograph using a camera. A professional photographer uses photography to make a living.

Of course!
You drive a car, you're a driver, you paint, you're an artist, but that says nothing your skill. That should be same for all who takes photos with a camera, be it pns, DSLR, medium format...They're ALL photographers!

Not so sure abt camera phone though, for now. But that may change in near future...lol

There will always be wannabes who are always on the look out for acknowledgment of any sort as to their status. Whether they seek for recognition or they proclaim themselves to be, end of the day its self esteem and confidence of one self. Usually empty vessels sound the loudest !

If u know who you are and what you are capable of, then ... "let your pictures do the talking" regardless of whether you are labeled a photographer or not :)

everytime someone faces me and calls "camera man! help us take photo!!", i'll turn around and pretend to see who they're calling, and then continue on my work..

Owning a SLR per se does not make you a photographer, but if you use the SLR to take photographs, then you can be termed a photographer. I echo Dream Merchant's views on this topic.

ehhh... got a lot of unkers out there own many cars but is not driver lehs...

wah this topic again.

does owning a knife makes you a killer?

I would think photographer is someone who paints with light. be he/she a good or lousy photography, as beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

hahahah!
I LOVE this!
the camera man title is too humiliating for a photographer!
i am not a pro, nor i can condiser myself as a photographer,
i am just someone who are into nice photograph.
dun ask me to define NICE.. it is all about personal prefernce. :)

just because I have the keys to an Enzo Ferrari, does not automatically make me an elite driver. I am still a driver of the car per se, but one can't juxtapose that to being a Formula 1 driver.

same thing with photography/photographers. any Tom/Dick/Harry/Jane/Sally with a device capable of capturing light into a still image is considered a photographer. whether he's any good, is another matter altogether.

that being said, I like how people say that they're into photography, when all they do is just take pictures of themselves in front of the mirror. I guess you have to start somewhere, no? ;p

hahahah, cam-whoring...wonder how or why that term came about...:dunno::bsmilie:

Sure you can, but you can be sure you will not have much business, and may even run foul of the law in certain countries.

I can buy a stethoscope and be a doctor already. :bsmilie:

Does owning a pen make me a herder of sheep :dunno:

Lol... I put their names down because they didn't use DSLRs to photograph before... What about the large format cameras and even medium format cameras? What about the old film cameras? I used their names because they are the people who have made provocative pictures, that's what made them famous... if I mentioned say... myself, would you take notice? I doubt so... haha...

I was trying to make a point that it's not the machine which defines who you are, but rather the person operating that machine that truly makes the person what they intend to be.

I think a photographer is a person who tries to convey their experiences or emotions through a photograph.

Actually, its both the machine and the person. To have one without the other will not work.
