Are commercial studios badly hit this round?

Hi all

I've been interested in working for commercial studios which majors in shooting products, still life, etc. With the current economic downturn, may I know, are the local commercial photography studios (those majoring in food, products, corporate reports, advertising) severely hit?

I am not an insider to this industry, so have no idea whether creative businesses like commercial photography is doing well or badly.

as with all other industries, none are spared. some are more adversely 'hit' than others. good luck in your journey.

Looks like I better continue learning and laying a good foundation on lighting and composition for the next 2 ~ 3 years.

Maybe, may try working as an photographer assistant when the economy recovers after that.

By they way, why does Agape say 'Won't do it in SG'?
Do you mean Commercial Photography in SG cannot do, or cannot do only during this current recession?

I'm aware that many photographer assistants strike out on their own after around 2 years of assisting, but not many find business success on their own. Therefore, the reality can be very harsh. Taking good photos and getting enough business can be 2 different story. I think Ken Rockwell emphasized this clearly in his article.

My personal opinion is every trade have success and failure. Unless you try you never know.

When people close, you open, when they leave, you enter, as our Minister always emphasize, when there is risk factor there exist also gain factor. Never try, never know.

Sometimes, also depend on luck.

Get hold of a copy of the Singapore Telephone Directory, Business volume, try your luck by phoning all the commercial photographic studio listed there. You will most probably get a realistic figure after calling say about 50s of them. Good Luck.

Recently I met a photographer who's shooting for a local commercial studio that specializes in F&B and Lifestyle, and he says his studio is still quite busy - and still going to overseas shoots and such. My take is that their clients still demand a certain level of quality and even in the current economic climate, their clients see the need to continue to stay visible or perhaps even up the ante.
