Rookie needs some advice on tripod...

I am using 450D , 24-105 F4L, 580EX II, wanna buy a tripod which is light and durable, any suggestions? Brand and price pls...


My budget is s$600, now eyeing GITZO GT1932--carbon fibre, 1.4kg...quite ideal...any comments? anybody using? How much and where did u get it?

If I were you and I knew that I have such a healthy budget ready to splurge on, hey why not man, get the best you can and you don't have to think about it in near future. For such budget, I'd go with either Gitzo, Slik or Velbon's line of Carbon Fibre series tripod.

for me ill recommend Gitai Tripods.. really firm, reliable and affordable.. i bought one from JL-Photo.net and still a huge fan of this brand (though its quite unknown of) but it's good!

Hi budget is $600 bro. Gitai is no where there. Haha. How about Gitzo or Manfrotto.

Do you plan on carrying the tripod for travel? If you do, it may be a good idea to go for Benro as others have suggested. I have been using Benro C168-M8 tripod + KangRinpoche NB3-B for a year now. This combo has gone through the mountains, deserts and seas with me. :bsmilie:

Yeah, I am a PRC, going for a trip in Inner-Mongolia where my dad was born, during CNY. The natural environment over there is very tough at this season. So I do need a good tripod...

In that case, weight and toughness are important factors to consider... Heavy tripods are painful to lug around but more stable. I often hang my backpack to the hook on my lightweight tripod to provide extra stability. :bsmilie:

I use Velbon Carmagne El 430 with great success. (5D&24-70L)
It's very sturdy, lightweight and inexpensive carbon fiber tripod.

Gitai Nomad Travel Tripod (5 section) is good.. one good thing is the legs and other parts can all be taken out for rutine maintainance like oiling or cleaning.. and it's like 40cm when kept (can keep into your small size luggage) and stable yet tall enough for your usage (view finder can be at 1.70cm or higher when battery grip is used) it's highly recommended (im the user myself).. from time to time i bring it for small shoots, also overseas trips..

$600 is a good budget for an tripod + head. Your setup quite light actually. If you dont mind the weight, can recommend the Slik U212 for $145 there + Benro 00 ballhead for $60-odd and use the rest of the cash for other things.

There are also the carbon fibre models as well as mix-ed materials tripods. You got time can visit cathay photo peninsula or marina square for a huge choice of tripods.

CF Gitzo plus head should cost more than $600....
up your budget to about $800 can get Gitzo plus manfrotto head...
