Nikon D60 or D80 or Canon D400

Hi, All

Knowing this is not new.. need some advise over which to get as above.. frankly.. after some test / review.. kind of lean towards to D60 or D80..
D60 is very new (replace of D40x) comparing both specs really cant tell much different.. (sorry for a newbie..). hope all guru here could enlighten me on this.

Any advise?

If you know it's not new, why are you asking the exact same questions then???? Just look right in the "Newbies corner", there's 3 or 4 threads on the first 2 pages that answer everything.

Recap:
D60 is a toy with no AF motor
D80 is better but might be replaced soon
400D (NOT D400) is an entry-level camera being replaced by the 450D.

Look at Pentax, Sony, Olympus too. Great value for money.

And all the other "go and feel them for yourself, use the cameras, test them, don't expect people to tell you what camera to get" advice.

I mean seriously, THIS CAMERA IS FOR YOU. As such, stop expecting people to tell you what to buy. do you rely on people to tell you what clothes to buy? What car to buy? What 4D numbers to buy?

been to the newbie corner.. but nothing mentioned about D60.. (after a search, that is y posted here..and sorry for the wrong post) again THANKS for the kind recap.

never would expect any advise like "THIS CAMERA IS FOR YOU"... yeah.. i do can buy based on my feel.. but whats the point if you just donno how to gauge on all the rating.. all the spec sheets are very details (only if it makes sense to me..otherwise would not even bother to ask here..hmm.. don't you think..no offend.. ).

Testing at showroom is kind of limited.. (how and what could you test there other than feel and some basic functions?) end of the day.. they all appear to be the same... (to me at least as a new learner... think all 3 is very fine to my level..

An advice to you bro.. D80 (Nikon) and 400D (Canon) are both good cameras which will satisfy you well as a beginner, and their built in functions are generally enough for most shooting situations. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Do visit the camera stores and have a one to one comparison between both models.

I personally like the 400D feel more but the D80 have a nicer design, all up to each individual, however the new 450D will be here soon anytime so you might want to wait awhile more and include the new model for comparison.

Do also look out for the bundle promotions or free gifts in the up-coming IT shows.

And if your choice is "Neither", there's fantastic cameras from the other manufacturers too. Don't limit yourself.

Are u a newbie to photography or only to Digital SLR?

If you are new to photography, may I suggest you hold your horses and attend a former SLR courses. Learn to appreciate what some of the technical terms mean to you as a photographer. They would also have some SLRs for you to try. (shooting session is the best to experience the camera, not over the counter). I have joinned the SAFRA photography course and tried both Canon and Nikon gears. If in the end you find that SLR is really not for you then at least the course fee is lesser than a SLR.

All the technical terms in the spec sheet correspond to certain aspect of photography. If you like to shoot low light without flash or tripod, then you would want high ISO. If you like to freeze high speed action then fast shutter speed.

Then you will need to consider the camera system you are buying into. If you want to shoot birds, then your system must allow that. The system is not restricted to the brand but also how many 3rd party alternatives you can find.

Utimately you are the photographer, and the camera just a tool. It must allow you to do what you want and not the other way around.

Do go for the coming IT show and experience the Nikon and Canon offering. (Pentax and other also).

well, I am new to DSLR, but not really new to photography.. (I think ) but only recently been really thinking of getting a DSLR. certainly agree about the "testing over the counter".
thanks. no problem with all the camera terms but only trying to get more advice from more experience users like you all here..

think there are some good guides by Zoossh which is really very details and very informative..
at least some masters could clearly pointed out that D40 is very good for a certain reasons.

primarily, i am looking over the D60 as the 1st steps.. (as even D40 has won many high recommendation over many reviews but there are just too many reviews out there... which to trust and which dont is simply too much.)

Looks like the mind have some direction already, let me nugde it a bit.

Get the D60, try it out. If you are satisfy with it, start to build your Nikon system, else sell it off and try the next system. You will lose some money but better then get stuck. D80 is definitely a workhorse and can AF lens with no built in motor (plus point over D60), but is a bit dated (graphic processor and other electronic).

DO NOT start to buy lens and accessories until you are comfortable.

I can understand TS dilemma on choosing the right DSLR cos I am someone like him too. all the detailed specs, online reviews and review videos can sometimes be overwhelming for us (newbies to DSLR).

Most of u all mentioned abt going to store to try out personally to have a hands-on feel. I admit that's the best way but sometimes (at least for me) it is quite paisei to go try out all the cameras then say "Thks, I'll go back and consider 1st." to the salesperson. I'm glad that Sony at least has provided Sony Galleries locally for me to try out their cameras w/o the "pressure" from salespersons.

I dun mean to start an argument or a war by making my comments here. Juz my 2 cents worth of personal view. 如有得罪，还请多多包涵。 :embrass:

When I was a newbie 3 yrs ago, I bought the canon 350D. Was and still very happy with it now.

If you are not in a hurry, wait till the IT show next wkend and see if they launch the 450D. If you have the budget, go for 40D or Nikon D80 (got more $? then D300 is of coz the best choice). Else no harm wait for the 450D as it has almost same specs as the 40D.

I would think that newer cams like 450D, 40D and D300 all comes with Live view which is definitely a very good feature to have coz we can shoot at weird angles without looking thru the view finder.

Just my opinions.

End of day, you gota see which brand you prefer and the feel of the cam. Of coz your budget as well. ;p

No need feel paisei bro, coz you are paying for it. Exp cams we buying. So of coz considerations is a must. Go courts or those big electrical stores to try. Some have display models to let you try. Best way is ask your friends who have those DSLR you considering to buy to let you try and test out.

However, camera is more than just hands-on feel. Without knowledge of the various buttons and switches it is not very productive, unless you already read and memorize the whole manual. Furthermore, looking only at a 2.5 - 3' screen is not going to tell you how good the final picture is going to be. The subject matter in the shop also can not try different type of exposure condition. All this can only be able to test in one or two photo taking session.

actually i'm leaning towards the canon 450D

anyway i've read somewhere that nikon is better in low light / indoor photography and canon is better outdoor or fast phtography is that true ?
cause actually my requirement is mainly low light indoor photo and i know the best camera for that is Nikon D300 but i;m beginner and i;m not willing to spend somuch on my first DSLR. so i lean towards canon 450D instead cause it;s should be quite cheap or 40D that also within my budget range
as for nikon D60 (only 2.5" LCD and no AF motor) and even though i read lots of good review on D80 (but it's a bit aold without sensor cleaning, dust reduction and so on)

so if i choose the canon 450D is that a wise choice ?

Yup, me too. When I bought my 400D, I had no idea how the heck to use the camera. Just buy, try, and thats the story..

On a sperate note... Courts Tampines next to Ikea is a very very good place to try cameras. The sales people are too lazy to sell stuff, so very peaceful.. Just that their security alarms go off very often when you touch stuff..

450D and 40D cannot compare by price... 40D is a higher end model, and will perform better.

I don't know about Nikons, but my 400D has excellent low light performance.

Since you say you are able to buy the 40D because it's within your price range, then I say go for it. But also take note, money is also required to buy more lenses.. And trust me, you will buy more lenses =D

If you are new and you are willing to read around, play around with your cam and do all kinds of experiments. You will be able to understand your cam very fast.

If you are new to the DSLR scene, might i dare suggest the D40.

The price of a D60 might as well spend on a D40 and the price difference use to buy other lenses.

Why D40? D60 is meant to replace D40X (unofficially) but the D40 has better flash sync albeit no AF-motor and since these 3 models are considered entry-level, you won't go wrong with the D40 right now at it's price point as well as VFM (value for money).

If you can afford abit more and are very sure of your passion in photography, i'd say Nikon D80 right now ;p
