D40X Lenses!!

Hi there fellow ClubSnappers!! I am new to this forum and photography...Very glad to be able to be with you all in here!!

I just bought a D40X...as an amateur...the budget price won me over...but now beginning to feel the constraints of this camera...the lack of focus motor...sigh...

Just would like to check with you all especially other D40/D40x users...what other lenses can we get for our camera besides the Nikon DX lenses...I heard Tamron is coming up with 3...but wonder when will they be available? Tamron has got a 70-300mm lens...which I assume is better than the Nikon DX 55-200mm?

BTW...heard from someone that it is rumoured that Nikon may have an upgrade for our D40/D40X which may probably a motor mount so that we can receive normal lenses...anyone heard of such news of this sort??

I also bot D40X less than 2 mths ago.

Didn't u know the limitation before you buy? Actually, the limitation is just that it doesn't have a autofocus motor on the body. ie. can only use AFS lense. For me, I got the AFS 55-200mm VR on top of the kit lens. That should cover quite a bit of scenarios, I think.

I also got a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. Now this one is where the so-called "limitation" comes in. It doesn't auto focus. Actually, manual focus is quite fun for prime since you don't zoom in and out anyway. Just turn the rubber grip to get the focus. Can't be that hard.

Since you bot liao, don't keep focusing on its limitation. Think abt the good side. Have fun.

Anyway if it is any comfort, there are a number of users who ( intentionally ) indulge in manual focus lenses ( such as those Carl Zeiss ones ) on their AF capable bodies. Manual focusing can be a joy, do not let it limit what you do

Don't focus in on what the D40/x cannot do... look at what it can do. Just do a search on Flickr and you can see lots of amazing pictures taken with the D40/x. Nikon is introducing the D60 as the next step up from D40x, but it also does not have the motor. If you want to get a Nikon cam with a motor, the D70/s is a good cam to get 2nd hand.

However, rather than jumping now to another cam, exhaust your D40/x first. The 18-55 kit lens is a very good and light lens. I've shot a number of events with the D40x using the kit lens + 55-200 + SB600, and it performs very well

Learn all you can about photography, especially in the area of composition. I find that even though I may have a good camera, if I don't have the "eye" for composition, my pictures will look like someone with a PnS camera taking simple holiday shots... and having said that... I've see some amazing shots from PnS cameras... and it is because of the composition!

Oh... the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM prime lens is a good one... and you can look at the Sigma HSM lenses that does AF on the D40/x.

I quite agree with you.. focus on the strenghts. And by the way.. how much would the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM cost?

Well.. excactly, I share the same sentiments with Dezmund. I didnt know about the limitations of the D40X. The budget was right and D40X was on promotion, and I bought it. :dunno:I was thinking of a 50mm f/1.8 too but didnt get it becasue of the manual focus. Should I plunge for this or the Sigma 30mm f1.4 HSM?
